Episode Notes
Down Syndrome, also called trisomy 21, occurs when an error in meiosis produces a germ cell with an extra copy of the 21st chromosome. A normal cell has two copies of each chromosome (except the gender chromosomes in males). Those with trisomy have three. The extra chromosome causes a number of problems including decreased intellect and various facial abnormalities. Outcomes are highly variable, ranging from relatively high-functioning to nearly completely dependent on caregivers.
