Ava Gregory thought life couldn’t get any better. She’s young, free and single with a great group of friends, a fabulous beach front house in California and a promising career as a fashion designer. But when she receives some devastating news from her home town in Kansas her whole life is turned upside down.

Ava learns that her sister and her husband have been tragically killed. Not only that, but she discovers that she has been entrusted with the care of their three children: 16-year-old Bradin, 12-year-old Nikki and eight-year-old Derrick. From carefree, cool aunt to responsible mother figure, Ava relies on the strong support system she finds amongst her roommates: the strong and wise Susannah; her ex-lover and close friend, Johnny; and the philosophical, philandering Aussie surfer Jay.

This trio of friends are determined to help Ava’s new charges cope with their traumatic loss as well as the dramatic lifestyle changes they experience being uprooted from their Kansas farm. Bradin has his own adolescent angst and raging hormones to deal with, while Nikki resents her aunt’s attempts to fit into her late sister’s shoes. The youngest sibling, Derrick, is troubled by nightmares as he struggles to understand why and where his parents have gone. Engaging, touching and often humorous, this drama deals with the hard-hitting issues of love, loss and sacrifice.
