A holier-than-thou deacon, Ernest Frye, is seeking a new minister for the First Community church. He decides to hire Reverend Reuben Gregory.
Deacon Frye tries to persuade a gifted gospel singer to join his church chior. After he gives her gifts, Deacon Frye's plan backfires when he causes the girl to think he wants to marry her.
Thelma gets Reverend Gregory drunk with her wine-cooked dinner, and he intoxicates her with a kiss. When he wakes up the next morning, Reverend Gregory must tell her he's not romantically interested in her. Later, the reverend must deal with over staffing.
Reverend Gregory is anxious to reinstate a teen who has been away from the church, until he finds out she's pregnant and unmarried. Fearing that her example might be a bad one for other teens in the church, he asks her to leave the choir. Later, she goes into labor at a baby shower and Deacon Fyre is the only one who can help her. Meanwhile, the gang is trying to learn to speak Italian.
Rolly is in love with a waitress named Leonaat a diner on the corner. He is too shy to approach her, so he asks Deacon Frye to do it for him. When the deacon finds out she doesn't know who Rolly is, he decides to ask the attractive waitress out himself. The deacon and Leona go to her house where her husband almost catches them. Meanwhile, Rolly goes out with Hannah, the real waitress.
Deacon Frye doesn't find the church's planned retreat interesting until he learns that a former client, whom the deacon caused to spend 5 years in jail, is out on bail and out to get him.
Rev. Gregory, charged for giving refugees sanctuary, and the deacon, charged with contempt of court while trying to defend him, receive a sentence of one day in jail. In jail, the reverend decides to preach his Sunday sermon to his cellmate Willie.
When Ernest is offered a position with a prestigious law firm, he turns to the Church board for a recommendation. They’re eager to help Ernest out, as long as he’s willing to return the favor and fulfill his commitments at the church.
When the owner of a record company expresses interest in signing Amelia, Ernest attempts to get a cut of the action by offering her his services by becoming her manager.
Upon learning that her grandfather is in the hospital, Thelma encourages Ernest to mend fences with his father-in-law before he passes away. At first he’s reluctant to do so, but upon finding out that Benjamin plans on leaving him and Thelma a large sum of money upon his death, Ernest promptly changes his mind.
After the Deacon convinces Reuben to televise his sermon on a local cable channel, he starts getting threats from a local gang in retaliation after their leader gets arrested.
When Reuben’s overbearing mother arrives in town to help plan the wedding, an argument between Reuben and Thelma after he finds out that Ernest took his mother to Atlantic City threatens to put an end to the wedding plans.
The Deacon and Amelia trade insults in and out of court after she trips on his steps and breaks her foot
Newlywed Thelma longs to buy a home, unaware that the Deacon has let her inheritance slip through his fingers.
Reuben doesn't seem to notice Thelma's efforts to recapture the glow of their newlywed days.
