Brisco returns home. The Brackmans control all of Echo Valley - except that it's actually Federal land, and the government has sold it to homesteaders. The Brackmans will go to any length to get the land back. The town's sheriff has crawled into a bottle, leaving only Brisco to deal with the mess.

The next big think might be the "talking machine". But it might be the last thing for Dixie Cousins, who overheard a conversation between John Bly and an important politician, and captured it on a wax cylinder. Bly has sent Winston Smiles, his top assassin, to kill Dixie and recover the cylinder.

Shannon and Tommy Trahern have left Brooklyn for San Francisco, there to collect their inheritance - the deed to a gold mine worth three million dollars. The man who ran their orphanage and several "johnnies" are all trying to get that deed for themselves.

The government hires men to steal the orb from Brisco. This sets in motion a chain of events that frees Bly from the device. That leaves Brisco facing two sets of powerful adversaries who want the orb. But help comes from an unlikely source.

Brisco must escort an agent to Mexico, part of a swap that will see a United States agent held by Spain returned home. But powerful forces seek to derail this exchange, and foment war between the two countries, for war is big business. They have placed an assassin among the passengers on the stagecoach. Add in Pete Hutton and his own criminal plans, and Brisco has his hands full.

Brisco and Bowler get the job of escorting a stagecoach full of money to Reno, Nevada. Robbers pounce, and Brisco recognizes one of them as... Dixie Cousins?!? When he gets to Reno he discovers her sister Dolly owns a casino, or did, until an imported criminal named Dino Tataglia swindled her out of it...
