The Robinson Family fight to survive on a mysterious remote island, where there are pirates, wild animals, illnesses, and many more dangers.
The Robinsons are passengers on a ship destroyed during a storm in the Pacific. Karl and Lotte Robinson with their children, Ernie and Fred, and an orphaned girl, Helga Wagner, manage to make their way to an uncharted island.
There, they meet a lovable rapscallion named Jeremiah Worth, a sailor marooned on the same island years before. The six then begin their fight to survive without any of the benefits of civilization.
The series is the story of the love, decency and courage they demonstrate while coping with tremendous obstacles.

In "Jean Lafitte," Part I, Jeremiah and the Robinson boys find a Jacob's Staff, an ancient navigating instrument, on the island. Aware of stories that Lafitte has a fortune secreted on some island off the sealanes, Jeremiah surmises that bearings taken from the post where the staff is set may indicate the location of hidden treasure. Meanwhile, in New Orleans, Lafitte and his men are ordered seized by the Governor, whom Lafitte has approached with the offer of his men, ships and guns against British forces in exchange for a pardon from Andrew Jackson for himself and his men and a chance to serve the country. Unknown to Lafitte as he prepares to sail for the island with Marie Carre, his lady friend, aboard, Gambi, a trusted aide, is plotting with the enemy. The series stars Martin Milner as Karl Robinson, Pat Delany as Lotte Robinson and Cameron Mitchell as Jeremiah Worth. The children are portrayed by Willie Aames as Fred Robinson, Eric Olson as Ernie Robinson and Helen Hunt as Helga Wagner.
Frank Langella guest stars as Lafitte. Neville Brand as his right-hand man Gambi. John Crawford as Lafitte's chief lieutenant, Dominique You, and Maria Grimm as Marie Carre, who loves the flamboyant buccaneer.
