Episode Summary

This is where is all begins; not only for the series, but also the entire legend that is 'Blackadder'.

It's the first battle of Edmund's post-pubescent years, and he has nearly missed it! But luckily for him, he makes it in time to have an impact on the outcome of the day; indeed an impact that will continue to haunt him. Furthermore, his self-perceived diabolical cunning leads him to new found nomenclature.

Episode Notes

Peter Cook plays King Richard III, the uncle of Brian Blessed's character, Richard, Duke of York (King Richard IV). However, in real life Cook was one month younger than Blessed. Likewise, Richard III is the great-uncle of Rowan Atkinson's character, Prince Edmund, although Cook was only seventeen years Atkinson's senior.

Rowan Atkinson (Prince Edmund/Captain Edmund Blackadder), Tony Robinson (Baldrick/Private S. Baldrick) and Tim McInnerny (Lord Percy Percy/Captain Kevin Darling) are the only actors to appear in both this episode and "Goodbyeee".

Episode Quotes

Prince Edmund: Well, frankly, everyone thought you were dead.
Richard III: Well, frankly, I am.
(His head floats away)

Percy: It will be a great day tomorrow for we nobles.
Prince Edmund: Well, not if we lose, Percy. If we lose, I'll be chopped to pieces. My arms will end up at Essex, my torso in Norfolk, and my genitalia stuck up in a tree somewhere in Rutland.

(Baldrick holds up a head, separated from its body)
Baldrick: Oh dear...Richard III.

Prince Edmund:. . . and I shall prove to all that I am a man.
Percy: Well, you are a man, my Lord.
Prince Edmund: But how shall it be proved, Percy?
Percy: Well, they could look up that tree in Rutland.

Prince Edmund: And what is your name, little fellow?
Baldrick: My name is Baldrick, my Lord.
Prince Edmund: Ah, then I shall call you . . . Baldrick.
Baldrick: And I shall call you my Lord, my Lord.

Edmund: Or, as I shall be known from now on: The Black...Vegetable!
Baldrick: My Lord, wouldn't something like "The Black Adder" sound better?
Edmund: No, wait. I think I have a better idea...What about…The Black…Adder!

Theme from The Black Adder:

The sound of hoofbeats across the glade
Good folk, lock up you son and daughter
Beware the deadly flashing blade
Unless you want to end up shorter

Black Adder! Black Adder!
He rides a pitch black steed
Black Adder! Black Adder!
He's very bad indeed

Black, his gloves are finest mole
Black, his codpiece made of metal
His horse is blacker than a hole
His pot is blacker than his kettle

Black Adder! Black Adder!
With many a cunning plan
Black Adder! Black Adder!
You horrid little man!!!

Baldrick: Very witty, my lord.
Prince Edmund: Thank you, Baldrick.
Percy: Very, very, very witty, my lord.
Prince Edmund: Thank you, Percy.
Baldrick: You're certainly wittier than your father, my lord.
Percy: Yes and head and shoulders over Richard III!
(Baldrick sighs and shakes his head slightly. Prince Edmund glares at Percy)
Prince Edmund: (angrily) Was that supposed to be witty?!
Percy: (hesitates) No, my lord. That-that was an example of the sort of thing that you yourself would not stoop to.
Prince Edmund: Go away!
Baldrick and Percy: Yes, my lord.

(Prince Edmund puts it on a crown and looks at himself in the mirror)
The Ghost of Richard III: Oh yes, very fetching.
(He turns around and screams for about six seconds)
The Ghost of Richard III: And "hello" to you.

Richard III: (referring to Prince Edmund) What a little turd.

Episode Goofs

King Richard IV is loosely based upon Richard of Shrewsbury, 1st Duke of York and 1st Duke of Norfolk, the youngest son of King Edward V. If he had still been alive at the time of the Battle of Bosworth Field on August 22, 1485, he would have been only 12 years old. However, in the series, Richard IV is not only a fully grown man but has two grown sons, Princes Harry and Edmund.

Although Prince Edmund is referred to as the Duke of Edinburgh, that title did not exist until 1726. Similarly, Percy is called the Duke of Northumberland; that title, however, was not created until 1551.

The series is built on a faulty premise. As Richard, Duke of York (Richard IV) was the son of Edward IV, Richard III's elder brother, he was ahead of his uncle in the line of succession to the throne, not behind as suggested here.
