Ellen Richmond (Ellen Degeneres) decides to trade in her fast-paced Los Angeles life for small town living in her hometown when her Internet start-up company fails, along with her social life. In the small town of Clark, Ellen starts rebuilding her life, step-by-step. She gets a job as a counselor at her old high school -- where Home Economics is still a part of daily student life -- and ends up moving in with her eccentric yet lovable mother, Dot (Cloris Leachman), and sister, Catherine (Emily Rutherfurd). But worlds collide when Ellen's prom date, Rusty (Jim Gaffigan), thinks that they can restart their relationship from years and years ago, and as Ellen gets reaquainted with her old high school teacher Mr. Munn (Martin Mull). But little by little Ellen begins to readjust to the life she left for the big city with the help of comedic situations that ease the transition.
