  Cultural References
Shaft

Ashley: Shaft is fictional, Will.
Will: But I'm saying he went to Africa and everything.

Shaft is a 1971 blaxploitation film that centers on a detective's fight against the black mob, and then the white mob. The movie was adaptation of Ernest Tidymanby's by Tidyman and John D.F. Black. It won an Academy Award for Best Music, Song for Isaac Hayes for Theme from Shaft. Shaft was followed by two movie sequels: Shaft's Big Score! in 1972 and Shaft in Africa in 1973.

Herman Melville's Moby-Dick

Will: Look at here, you big orange Moby-Dick.

This is a reference to Herman Melville's novel Moby-Dick, which centers around Captain Ahab's destructive and obsessive hunt for a great white whale, Moby-Dick.

Michael Bolton

Vivian: Will, at this age Nicky is like a sponge. If he hears something he likes, he gonna imitate it.
Will: Oh, kinda like Michael Bolton.

Michael Bolton was sued by Three Boys Music who claimed that significant parts of the Bolton's 1991 hit "Love Is A Wonderful Thing" were taken from the 1966 Isley Brothers song of the same name (Three Boys Music Corporation v. Bolton, Central District Federal Court). In 1994 the court ruled in favor of the complainant.

Dougie

Dougie is a spoof of Barney, a popular kids icon who is similar to Dougie.
