Lyle and Erik Menendez shot their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, dead in August 1989. The brothers claimed that they had killed their parents after suffering years of abuse, but prosecutors argued the brothers killed to get the family's fortune, about $14 million. They were convicted by a single jury in a 1996 retrial and were sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole.
