Carolyn Muir, a widowed writer, moves into Gull Cottage overlooking Schooner Bay with her children, housekeeper, and dog. Mrs. Muir quickly discovers there is another resident of the house: the ghost of Captain Daniel Gregg, one-time owner of the home. The name is familiar to Mrs. Muir, as her landlord is Claymore Gregg (nephew of the late captain). The Captain and the widow start with a strained relationship, yet they grow in respect for each other, with even a hint of romance.
The series ran for two years, one year on NBC and one on ABC, and was based on the 1947 film The Ghost and Mrs. Muir that starred Rex Harrison and Gene Tierney in the title roles.
