This comedy follows the trials and tribulations of Darryl Hughley and his family as they leave the inner city behind them to set up home in the affluent suburbs. Based on the real-life experiences of the shows creator, D. L. Hughley, this hilarious series charts the struggles of an African- American family man, trying to stay grounded in upwardly mobile, white-dominated suburbia.
Terrified that his head-strong kids will be spoiled by their new lifestyle, the ever-stubborn Darryl is determined to make them learn the value of money and privilege, supported by his long-suffering but devoted wife Yvonne.
Meanwhile he has to contend with his pretentious neighbours, especially the tall, loud and ultra-white Dave and his kooky psychologist wife Sally, whose mission is to analyse just about everybody in the neighbourhood. In the opening episode, the family are getting settled into their new surroundings, but Darryl keeps seeing racism where there is none, while his best friend, the hapless Milsap, scares him into thinking he’s losing his blackness.
