| The planned casting of Allen was to feature him as a white male based on series creator Tom Lynch. When Arjay Smith tried out for the role, he won it after the first casting. | The series faced minor controversy when it was previewed. Many had issues with a black boy being an alien from another planet. | The novelization of this episode featured Allen explaining his race and where he came from. Robbie and Josh's mother is given more of a background story that was not included in the pilot. It also featured scenes not included in the pilot. |

| Josh
He states his mother is living in another state, however the novelization has her living in San Francisco. Also a scene with Robbie learning her mother can't pick her up because of a hospital emergency would imply that she couldn't live that far from Robbie. |
