The main sketch ideas are as follows: Benjamin arrives to stay in Royston Vasey with his aunt Val and uncle Harvey; the Local Shop has some visitors, who strangely disappear; we get our first glimpse of the Job Centre and Pauline, the restart officer; Geoff, Brian, and Mike, three co-workers at plastics factory, go for a drink and a joke at the local; and the vet, Mr. Chinnery, sees his first on-screen patient.
This episode sees the continuing tale of Tubbs and Edward, particularly as it pertains to there being a new road into Royston Vasey planned; Benjamin is now discovering why "You'll Never Leave!" Royston Vasey; and Pauline is continuing her class for the unemployed.
Meanwhile some new characters appear: Iris and Judee are a cleaner and affluent middle aged widow respectively, who seem to not just come from different classes, but different worlds altogether; Pop, Rich, and Al are a family who own a news-stand, that Pop runs with an iron fist, that has diversified in its merchandise; Henry and Ally have not much going on, so they spend there time looking for videos to rent; Hilary Briss, the local butcher, peeks our interest as we learn of his illicit dealings; and finally failed rock star Les McQueen, is clinging to his past 'glory' that is his band, Creme Brulee.
The sagas continue: firstly, the road seems to become more of a reality, much to the chagrin of Tubbs and Edward; the Denton family continues it's odd path, but Benjamin is unable to adjust to this new life; the 'mystery meat of Hilary's butcher shop' plot thickens as he encourages a customer, Maurice, to have a try; and finally, Pauline is made to look a fool in front of the entire group.
The less narrative characters that return: Mr. Chinnery tends to a peaky turtle; and Geoff, Brian, and Mike discuss upcoming nuptials.
Making a new appearance are Lance Longthorne, the joke store owner, and Bernice, the reverend with an attitude.
Edward's beast has halted the construction of the road while Mr. Chinnery is brought in to examine the specimen and give his expert opinion. The twins, of the Denton family, make their first appearance, and add an even weirder aspect for Benjamin to deal with.
Bernice berates a class of kiddies who will watch the Legz Akimbo theatre group, which specializes in promoting social awareness. Mr. Foot, a loud and obnoxious man, has a chat with a blind man in a park. And lastly, Charlie and Stella, a couple that have been married just a little too long, communicate through arguing.
Love is in the air as Mike is getting married to Cheryl, and Geoff delivers the wedding speech. Les McQueen is all to ready to offer his guitar services to the wedding band, but they're not interested. Meanwhile, Mr. Foot has a lovely chat with a disabled bloke.
Away from the wedding, the Denton family is all too much for Benjamin and he's determined to get out.
Barbara, the only cab-driver and transsexual in Royston Vasey, has just put a personals add in the local paper.
Henry and Ally mistakenly walk into Kieslowski's Trois Coleur: Bleu.
Mick McNamara, the cave tour guide, makes his first appearance in the show.
Lastly, Maurice is dying for some more mystery meat.
The final show of the first series sees many surprises: the owner of the construction company comes to the local shop personally to get the road built and also drop a bombshell on Tubbs and Edward; Ross reveals his true identity to Pauline; Brian, Mike, and Geoff go out and celebrate Geoff's birthday, only everyone gets a birthday surprise.
Also, Benjamin runs away . . . again. Barbara finally goes in for the operation. Mr. Chinnery shows a class of children the miracle of birth with a cow. Finally, Bernice gives a sermon to her flock.
This episode and series opens ominously, at night. By day break, however, one of the oddest characters first appears, Papa Lazarou and his circus of freaks. The Denton family seem so lonely (but remain odd) without Benjamin, but that may change. Pauline is put on the other side of the school desk. Hilary's business is booming and he's turning away customers who ask for the special product.
Also new to the screen are the charity shop old ladies.
The mysterious nose bleeds of Royston Vasey continue. Edward and Tubbs are looking for a play-thing for their son, and the Denton family break into song as they go over the rules for Benjamin. Pauline finally gets some work, but not exactly what she had hoped. Al invites a woman over to his house for dinner, but Pop makes things a bit uncomfortable. Also in this episode, Mr. Chinnery takes a gander at a lizard.
Some new characters emerge: one is a Herr Lipp, the German tour guide; the others are Alvin and Sunny, who have a business providing discreet orgies at their Windemere B&B.
In this episode, Les McQueen is reliving the past at work, at the nursing home; and while on the job he receives an offer to make a dream come true. Iain Cashmore goes to a dating agency, only to find a complete bitch, Olive, working there. The Pauline saga continues after she and Mickey get sacked from the burger restaurant and have to go see Ross. Edward is getting worried about aging and the future of the 'Local Shop'; so he decides his son needs a wife. Henry and Ally are back in the video store, checking out Richard III. Maurice is gagging for some more mystery meat. Pop is renting out an apartment to a nice young couple. Charlie and Stella are helping out a friend, who has a nose-bleed, and babysits her child. Lastly, three doctors sit down for a hand of a simply complex card game!
Geoff, Brian, and Mike are off to their company's annual conference, but run into a snag or two along the way. Then, Henry and Ally have a short conversation about fictitious fighting. The charity shop is reluctant to accept anything that hasn't got the 'special mark'. The mayor makes an appearance to help calm the people about the nose-bleed situation. Judee is back from her time away, and needs to drop by Iris' for her keys. A man who is badly in need of more petrol finds his way to the Local Shop. Herr Lip is trying to organize a football match and approaches Justin about playing. Pam Doove auditions for a TV commercial. It's 'Nude Day' in the Denton household, only Benjamin is a bit apprehensive about joining in. Mr. Chinnery pays a house call to Mrs. de Courcey and her flatulent canine, Bently. Pop checks in on his new tenants, and brings them some old world gifts. Finally, the nose-bleeds have brought in health officials and the mystery meat is getting a closer look.
Pauline's plan hasn't gone off without a hitch. Also, there's a quarantine on and the butcher's shop is closed; and Maurice is worried there may be a connection between the 'special stuff' and the nose-bleeds. Chris Frost, a store detective, is taking some people on a tour of the premises. Creme Brulee has a 'reunion' of sorts, only Les wasn't invited. Geoff, Brian, and Mike are still stuck in the middle of nowhere and still en route to the conference. Benjamin uncovers a plot against him, but is powerless to do anything. Herr Lip invites Justin over for a party; but it's not all that Justin expects. Finally, Edward and Tubbs finally find a wife for their son.
Royston Vasey is in chaos! The citizens are demanding answers from the mayor, but instead they get another visit from the Legz Akimbo theatre group. Mr. Chinnery and John are setting a rehabilitated falcon free. Judee pops into to the supermarket to buy some alcohol and ends up going through Iris' checkout. Benjamin just may have found a way out of the Denton home! Amid the chaos, a customer comes to the Charity Shop to pick up a bag. The Local Shop, meanwhile, is holding a wedding ceremony! Charlie and Stella have a guest over, Tony, to play a game of Trivial Pursuit. Also, the time has now come for Herr Lip to say goodbye to Justin and Royston Vasey.
It's Christmas time in Royston Vasey and Bernice, the vicar, is inundated with people seeking advice: Charlie has been plagued with horrible dreams ever since taking up line dancing; and older fellow named Matthew tells a tale about Herr Lipp back in Duisburg in 1975; and Mr. Chinnery is at his wits end because of a horrible family curse originating his great-grandfather. Finally, Bernice must confront her own history and dislike of Christmas.
The saga continues, briefly, with Edward and Tubbs. The Pauline, Mickey, and Ross story also makes a reappearance as we catch up with their new lives. Peter has gathered his family and friends to practise his funeral. Dr. Carlton has an unorthodox method of diagnosing and treating his patients.
Lance Longthorne is tired of life with one arm and wants the problem rectified immediately. Barry Banks and Glen, from JG Debt Recovery, are having a hard time collecting anything, angering their boss, Lisgoe. Owen, the mortician, gives a talk (monologue) to some 'people'.
Mike pops over to Geoff's with some unfortunate news about his job; and then Geoff has to decide what to do, now that he's unemployed. Legz Akimbo are rehearsing their new play about disabilities, and Oliver has the idea that they need to use method acting in their daily life.
Alvin and Sunny are back with another B&B orgy, only this time they have a special guest, 'Daddy', who brings with him a special device; Alvin, however, doesn't quite feel at home in that environment, and longs for a change. Also, Casey Emma Glass has joined the Junior Miss Elegance pageant, with the 'help' of her 'loving' parents, Nancy (not her real mother) and Noel. Meanwhile, Terry and Anne are going door to door to check and make sure everyone has had their LTP (life time protection) done.
Charlie and Mrs. Levinson have a good racket going: she fronts as a masseuse, but he is the real masseur. Soon, he starts making larger and larger tips because of his thorough job. Neds has made a super car, Maxi Power, and with his mate Tristan, he sets off to fight crime. In the meantime, a man is seeking information from women for a special 'report'.
When one of the Charity Shop ladies, Vinnie, meets with misfortune, the Charity Shop has to look for a replacement. They find someone new, but something is just not quite right. The Kenny Harris Dog Cinema has a problem: Dougal Siepp a competitor has come back into town to open the 'Cat Theatre'. Pam Doove makes a slight re-appearance, only this time she has already got the role, in a stage play by the Royston Vasey Players. Dean Tavalouris is an aspiring magician and he's taking his camera out onto the streets of Royston Vasey to 'wow' the locals.
Finally, it's the end of the series and the show. At the end of the episode it looks back at the various characters and shows how their lives are a little time down the line.
