Episode Notes

This episode was the first of The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour ever produced.

This episode originally ran for 75-minutes. CBS did not like the idea of this, but producer Desi Arnaz had asked the follow-up show, The United States Steel Hour, if they'd allow Lucy-Desi to borrow 15 minutes of their programming. They graciously accepted.

Ann Sothern, a friend and former co-worker of Lucille Ball's, received $25,000 for her appearance in this episode. Marking the first television crossover role ever, Ann Sothern is playing Susie McNamara from her own TV series, My Private Secretary.

This episode uses a fourth camera technique. The first episode of I Love Lucy was the only other Lucy project to use this technique.

This episode was sponsored by the Ford Division of the Ford Motor Company.

Episode Quotes

(On deck as Lucy and Susie hit Fred up for a date to the dance and Ethel approaches)
Susie: You know, there's a dance on board tonight, but I suppose a man like you already has a date.
Ethel: Yes, he has.
Lucy: Get away, girl, we saw him first.
Ethel: Oh, I wish you had, but unfortunately I did.

Cultural References

Susie: I hate to tell you, Lucy, we're traveling on a floating YWCA.

Susie refers to the cruise ship as the YWCA due to the lack of available men on board. The YWCA stands for 'Young Women Christian Association' and is a female counterpart to the YMCA or the 'Young Men Christian Association'. Back in these days, women couldn't go into the YMCA, so they responded with the YWCA, however, YWCA's are no longer commonplace.
