Episode Notes

Emmy-winning director James Frawley appears as Oracullo's cohort, Rudi Bayshore.

Burgess Meredith, who played The Penguin on Batman (ABC, 1966-68), has a cameo as The Penguin in this episode. The last first-run episode of Batman, "Minerva, Mayhem And Millionaires," aired on ABC three days after the telecast of this episode.

The Monkees' 1968 cover of the 1966 Boyce & Hart tune "Valleri" ---from the A-side of the single and the B-side of The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees ---made its only appearance on The Monkees in this episode.

The Birds, The Bees & The Monkees received minuscule promotion on The Monkees in the final two episodes of the series. Unlike the summer of 1967's Monkees repeats, no attempt was made to re-dub the summer '68 reruns with new music from the new album.

"Valleri" is featured here with a cold ending, which was not present on the single or The Monkees fifth album; on those recordings, the song fades out at the end. Several reissues of the song feature the ending intact.

Frank Zappa appeared with The Monkees as The Critic in their 1968 motion picture, HEAD.

The song "Mother People" was composed by Zappa, recorded by Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention and included as a track on their 1968 LP, We're Only In it For The Money.

In the original Screen Gems Storyline for "The Monkees Blow Their Minds," the tag has Mr. Latham booking the dog act but balking at their demands. When they use a water gun on him, Latham offers them everything ha has. Also, prior to the Oracullo And His Four Slaves act at The Club Casandra, Rudi spills Oracullo's magic potion--though the boys still seem to be entranced.

This episode incorporates footage from "Here Come The Monkees" and "I've Got A Little Song Here."

"The Monkees Blow Their Minds" is the first filmed episode of The Monkees to feature the boys decked out in their famous eight-button, black velvet shirts.

This episode marks the final onscreen appearance of Mike Nesmith in his wool cap and speaking with his "old" voice.

Episode Quotes

Frank Zappa as Mike: Hi, I'm Mike Nesmith and I'm one of The Monkees. Tonight, as my guest on this wonderful television program that has done so much for the young people out there, I have as my special guest none other than Frank Zappa. That world renowned person, participant in, perhaps even leader of, none other than The Mothers Of Invention. And here he is, love ya, Frank Zappa.
Mike as Frank Zappa: Hi kids, hi Mike.
Frank Zappa as Mike: Hi.
Mike as Frank Zappa: It's really (fixes fake nose that's falling off) It's really great to be here.
Frank Zappa as Mike: It is? (Mike's fake nose falls off, and he fixes it) We have a lot of zany things on this show, don't ya think? Well, tell me Frank?
Mike as Frank Zappa: Tell you what Mike?
Frank Zappa as Mike: No, you're suppose to talk like Frank. This is one of the cute numbers on the show.
Mike as Frank Zappa: Oh that's right. I'm suppose to be you, and you're suppose to be me, right?
Frank Zappa as Mike: See the way we worked this out in advance?
Mike as Frank Zappa: (fixes false nose again) My nose keeps falling off.
Frank Zappa as Mike: When you first got into the psychedelic music business was it difficult...(Mike's nose falls off again) I know that you used to work in Hollywood alot.
Mike as Frank Zappa: It was more of a come on guys, let's go situation.
Frank Zappa as Mike: That's like The Beach Boys?
Mike as Frank Zappa: A lot of that...we did a lot of that.
Frank Zappa as Mike: You know that after I quit the show I'm gonna join The Byrds don't ya?
Mike as Frank Zappa: (laughs) No, I didn't know that.
Frank Zappa as Mike: When you quit The Mothers, who are you gonna join?
Mike as Frank Zappa: I may join The Byrds too. I wanted to get in a very serious area that of course is very important to me...Frank Zappa. Sometimes thought of as creative genius, especially in the area concerning your Monkees music, which appears to me to be banal and insipid you know?
Frank Zappa as Mike: You think our music, The Monkees music is banal and insipid?
Mike as Frank Zappa: Well words like that are hard to read, especially side by side.
Frank Zappa as Mike: (looks into the camera) Ever try reading Mike and Frank?
Mike as Frank Zappa: Do you even know where the soul of your music was. Is it on the 1 and the7, or is it on the 1 and the 5.
Frank Zappa as Mike: The soul of you're music is on the 1 and the7 and sometimes on the 3 and the 5, the soul of our music, Monkees music lies somewheres in the 1 1/2, the 2 1/2, the 3 3/4 and the giant C major chord on the piano, which I'll demonstrate for you. We have wonderful music (turns chair around to the piano) match cut. We all take our positions in front of the camera, because this is the Monkees and we're really tricky.
