The McCoys move from their home in Smokey Corners, West Virginia to Fernando Valley, California to run a ranch Grandpa McCoy inherited from his brother. There they meet Pepino, the ranch hand, and neighbors Flora and George MacMichael. But the McCoys find it hard to leave West Virginia behind.
The McCoys start up their own roadside egg stand, which results in an egg fight with their neighbor, Harry Poulson.
The male McCoys think they can outsmart their female counterparts by using the money stashed away in the cookie jar to buy a shotgun instead of the dress for Kate it was being saved for.
Grampa thinks Luke is being henpecked by Kate, but when Luke tries to prove Grampa wrong, he ends up sleeping on the couch.
Grampa is encouraged to invite Flora MacMichael as his date to the annual Valley Rancers' Fall Dance. Grampa refuses at first, but quickly changes his mind when he hears Flora is the best cook in California.
