Ellen's refrigerator dies so Anita offers to buy her a new one using her employee discount. But when Anita begins dating the appliance section manager, they have to move the refrigerator to Anita's house so their scam isn't found out, which would result in Anita getting fired. However, switching refrigerators is easier said than done.

Ellen decides to buy a new car, so Adam helps her out with some aggressive bargaining strategies. But Ellen takes to the bargaining a little too well and ends up getting Glenn, a salesman, fired for selling the car too cheap. Ellen, feeling guilty, returns to the dealership and buys a car that she can't afford, but returns it, getting Glenn fired once again. Feeling even more guilty, Ellen gets Glenn a job at the bookstore, but his new job doesn't go so well.

At the bookstore, a coffee shop has been built and Joe has been hired as the manager, which makes Ellen his boss. However, Ellen becomes uncomfortable being Joe's boss and the two quickly become enemies. Meanwhile, Ellen misinterprets Steve's actions and hits on him in order to find out if Steve was really coming on to her or not. However, things go wrong when Holly, Steve's girlfriend, sees Ellen hitting on him and Ellen is left to convince Holly that Steve made a pass at her first.
