The episode opens with Raymond finishing the morning’s briefing. Goody, as usual has difficulty in grasping some basic concepts. Grim, thereafter, cannot help but belittle Raymond and the entire uniform branch; then shows Fowler the key to the future of crime prevention: computers. He’s also got a hot case going, involving stolen credit cards; Raymond, however, disagrees with the need for computers, and declares that a man needs only to look after his possessions and therefore not have to worry about theft.
The next scene is Goody and Habib at the scene of a home break-in. It’s simply routine, but Goody suspects an inside job for insurance. The victim of the crime is completely distraught and cannot believe that it has happened to him.
The next scene has Habib explaining to Dawkins her own despair at her inability to offer the victim anything other than verbal comfort. Dawkins suggests that Habib just get used to keeping her private feelings and the job separate, yet Habib brings to her attention the fact that her relationship with Fowler – who only cares about the police – leaves her a little hypocritical to make such a suggestion. Dawkins, in turn, then takes umbrage with the fact that Habib suggested Raymond’s mind is singularly on the force, and declares that he has a soft romantic side; at which time he enters the room, acting anything but romantic. Dawkins then informs Maggie that tomorrow will be their 10th anniversary, and she will cook him a surprise breakfast in bed.
The next scene begins with the aforementioned surprise breakfast. Despite the fact that it looks and tastes horrible, Raymond is nevertheless flattered that she went through all the trouble. He cannot, however, understand what motivated her to make such a gesture, but she is very confused and surprised that he may have forgotten. He then tells her he has to leave early as he has to pick up a small gift item before going to work – and she automatically assumes he has remembered their anniversary afterall.
The following scene begins with Grim feeling extremely frustrated about his computers not being able to get them to work. That is until Kray tells him to ‘integrate his power supply at source (plug it in).’ Over to Raymond, who has the days topic, that is after he notifies them of the big day coming up – the Queen’s birthday. He has not only purchased her a gift, but also expects his colleagues to all chip in for the cost of it. The officers, on the other hand, are not happy with that idea.
Maggie is called away for a moment to talk to the victim of the early robbery, but she is sad to tell him has been no progress in the case. When she goes back to her desk Raymond has begun his topic of the day: pick-pocketing. He uses Goody as an example, and pick-pockets some candy bars from him. When he encourages people to pick his pocket he realizes that he’s not got his wallet.
Leaving the meeting, Goody is angry that he took his candy bar and says how he is crazy, and especially for buying the Queen a present – which is overheard by Patricia. Goody continues, that he is upset because he was going to give Habib the Mars Bar. Frank protests though, that he cannot get a woman like Maggie without acting like a man. Treat a woman firmly, don’t ply her with sweets.
Over to Raymond, who is first having difficulty getting through to the credit card company to report his lost card, and then confronted by Patricia, who is incensed that he purchased a present for the Queen as opposed to her. They have a small argument in front of the rest of the station. After she leaves, he then gets into a further discussion with Maggie about male companionship in books, such as Biggles and Sherlock Holmes and homosexuality. He cannot believe his ears that something so simple has been tainted. Fowler then takes his collection canister and goes to CID to ask for donations for the present, but what he finds is more arguments, this time about spelling and grammar.
Frank’s advice of being firm and masterful is taken to heart by Goody, who runs riot while on the beat with Maggie, trying to attract her; she, on the contrary, is not at all impressed with his new persona. She thinks twice about being on the force altogether. She has no time to think though, as Fowler has received a call about a suicide jumper on the ledge, and requires Maggie to accompany him in case he needs a female officer. She discovers that it’s the same man who was burgled. She gives him a heartwarming talk about why he shouldn’t give up.
When they return to the station, Grim and Kray confront Raymond about the fact that his credit card was used for criminal activity. To get them back, Patricia, over hearing the whole thing, says that Grim’s house has been burgled, at which point he leaves forthwith. Enter Goody, with some chocolates and champagne, but Habib says she dislikes that even before he gives it to her, so Raymond seizes the chance and takes it as his own, as a gift for Dawkins . . . too bad he didn’t notice there was a card attached with Maggie’s name. Some major slapping action then ensues between Maggie’s hand and Goody’s cheek, and Fowler’s cheek and Dawkins’ hand.
