After selling their calf Bullet to a neighbor, the family attempts to buy him back to comfort the children and the calf's mother. However, John and Olivia are unable to buy him back because of the high price neighbor wants for him. On top of that, after hearing that Bullet will be slaughtered, Elizabeth and Jim-Bob steal the calf in order to save his life.

At home, Mary Ellen is starting to question her tomboy way of life when she has the chance of buying either a fancy new dress or a catcher's mitt.

Wanting to submit one of his stories to a magazine, John Boy secretly borrows a typewriter from the Baldwin sisters after Olivia tells him not to. And to make matters worse, not realizing that it is in the shed full junk, Mary Ellen mistakenly sells it to a junk man and ultimately goes on a wild goose chase in order to retrieve it for John Boy.

After seeing a meteor crash into Walton's Mountain, Grandpa believes that is a sign that his days are numbered and stays in bed waiting for his end. It isn't until he learns that a distant cousin of the Baldwin sisters starts to exploit the meteor crashing into their "recipe" room that ultimately brings out of bed.

When the new pastor (Rev. Fordwick) arrives on the mountain, he stays with the Walton’s and starts to lock horns with John Boy regarding his sermons. Instead of the belief of putting the fear of fire and brimstone in the congregation’s heads, John Boy believes that compassion and forgiveness is a better lesson to teach. Eventually, John Boy and Rev. Fordwick come to understand one another and start to respect each other.

When a Jewish family arrives on Walton's Mountain after fleeing Nazi Germany, they want to leave everything about their culture and religion behind them. This becomes slightly difficult when Jim-Bob and a friend accidently through a rock through their window. When their son wants to celebrate his upcoming Bar Mitzvah, his father has to overcome his fears of religous persecution in his new country.

However, John or Zeb never took the time to file a deed claiming the property as theirs and now they stand to loose it all. When the family pulls together in order to pay the legal fees needed to register the property, John Boy gets a job off the mountain to do his part.

Verdie Grant, a neighbor of the Waltons, has always longed to learn how to read and write. In order to suprise her daughter at her college graduation, she asks John Boy to teach her how - as long as he doesn't tell anyone that she is illiterate. However, Elizabeth finds out about it and manages to spill the beans about it, and when Verdie finds out about it, she thinks John Boy told someone and blames him. Things eventually get straightened out and John Boy and Verdie continue on as teacher and pupil.
