As Rev. Fordwick and Miss Hunter prepare for their upcoming wedding and short honeymoon, Olivia and John Boy prepare to take their places as teacher and preacher while they are gone. While both Olivia and he are nervous, John Boy is concerned that he doesn't know what to speak about. However, as he observes his family and friends during the week, John Boy is able to find the inspiration needed to speak in front of the church congregation.

When a dean at Boatwright University becomes concerned with John Boy's physics grade, he has Lyle, a young genius tutor him. When he asks John Boy to take him home for the weekend to experience family life, Lyle and the rest of the Walton's begin disagreeing, especially when the young man expresses his beliefs regarding religion. When the family starts planning a church bazaar to help out a neighbor, Lyle unexpectedly has to help out, resulting in the Walton's learning that he is actually a nice young man with a good sense of humor.

However, when some secrets regarding their father come to light, Miss Mamie and Emily are embarrassed and vow to become recluses. Fortunately, upon further investigation, John Boy and the journalist find records clearing Judge Baldwin's name, making the sisters happy.

When John Boy is sent to the local fair to cover the story of a wing-talker, he becomes intrigued with her and invited her to come up to Walton's Mountain to stay with the family for a few days. From that point on, things get emotionally entangled when the girl starts getting flowers and thinks they were sent by John Boy. However, the truth comes out and she learns that Jim Bob is the young man who has a crush on her.

With Olivia working as the substitute teacher while Miss Hunter is on her honeymoon, the Walton children find it difficult to share her with the other students. After a few days in class, Olivia starts to help a student that the other children calls slow. Upon learning the reason why he does poorly in class is due to needing glasses, Olivia goes to his parents and persuades them to buy the boy glasses. As this is occurring, John Boy learns that his former girlfriend Marcia has come back to the mountain to sell her father's house to finance her fiancé’s new business.

Unsure of how to help the grieving young widow, it isn't until Calico, the family's old cat, delivers a litter of kittens that helps young Olivia come to terms of Bob's death.

Also discussed in this episode is the Abdication of King Edward the Eight in order to continue his relationship of an American woman.

When the Walton's cousin Vera leaves her husband, she goes to stay with them, telling the family that Wade doesn't love her anymore. Upon learning Vera is with her family, Wade confesses to her that he was only making some extra money running moonshine made by his uncle. After Wade gets arrested for running the shine, he realizes that he and Vera weren't at home in the city and they ultimately move to Walton's mountain, where Wade begins to work for John.

When Mary Ellen is sent a letter from the Nursing School at the University of Virginia, she tries to take a test to be let in the program, only to learn she needs to take Chemistry and Algebra to be prepared for the nursing course load. After being turned away, she goes to Nora Taylor, the county nurse, for tutoring in those subjects. When she offers to help Nora with her work in exchange for learning the subjects, Mary Ellen soon sees that becoming a nurse in order to help the folks of the mountain is what she was meant to do.

After being teased by Erin and Ben for not looking like the rest of the family, Jim Bob begins to suspect that he might not be a Walton. As he begins to ask questions on whether he could have been adopted, Jim Bob learns that several people on the mountain remember clearly remember the day he was born and he learns about the difficulties Olivia had while in labor and was never talked about afterwards. To make him feel better, John Boy takes Jim Bob to the county records office so he for himself that he is truly a Walton and to learn about his birth.

However, a special guest to the re-enactment informs Grandpa that he truly was a hero in the battle in his eyes.

When Olivia starts making dresses for the Baldwin sisters to make some money after some milling equipment breaks, her sewing skills get noticed by a woman who owns a dressmaking shop. Once Olivia gets offered a full time job, she gets the close friendships of other women that she has been looking for. However, when the owner of the shop talks about expanding the business and have Olivia manage the new shops, she decides that the place she truly wants to spend her time at is at home.

After Grandma arrives home from visiting a sick friend, she immediately starts planning Mary Ellen's quilting, a custom that announces when a young lady is ready to accept gentlemen callers. However, when Mary Ellen finds out what Grandma has planned, she refuses to partake in the custom, which causes a rift between her and Grandma. It isn't until when John Boy explains Grandma's intentions of planning the quilting that Mary Ellen finally agrees to attend the gathering.

When Grandma finds out that the old Whitley house is about to be demolished, she teams up with the Baldwin sisters to help save it so all the community can use it for various functions. However, not realizing that Grandma wants to save the house, Grandpa is in favor of tearing down the house and salvaging some of the better lumber from the house, resulting in a huge argument between the couple. To make matters worse, John Boy has to write an editorial for his school paper about whether or not the house should be saved. Ultimately, Grandma and Grandpa mend their fences and the Whitley house gets remodeled.

100 :04x25 - The Collision (Mar/04/1976)
When Selina Linville, an old flame of John Boy's, comes back to Walton's Mountain, the two start going together. However, things aren't the same between them, especially when Selina calls John Boy a coward when he won't go with her to write about the Spanish Civil War. Things ultimately get better when John Boy speaks his mind and tells Selina that he's already fighting a war, a war against the depression and asks her to stay on the mountain and transfer to Boatwright University. Also, while this is going on, Elizabeth feels that her new friend Ariel is always bragging about what beautiful things she has to make her feel jealous. However, when Elizabeth learns that Ariel is an orphan and lives with her aunt, she isn't mad and still wants to be friends with her.
