101 :05x01 - The First Edition (Sep/23/1976)
When John Boy finds the perfect stories to put in the first edition of his paper, the family is worried about the repercussions the backlash could have on the individuals involved and ask him to not print them. When he and his family reach a compromise regarding the stories, John Boy publishes his first edition of The Blue Ridge Chronicle. Also, Ike and Corabeth learn they are unable to have children of their own after Corabeth announces she is pregnant.

102 :05x02 - The Vigil (Sep/30/1976)
After Dr. Vance announces his intention of leaving Walton's mountain because of being unable to pay his taxes, Grandma gets sick with an acute appendicitis and ultimately needs an operation. While she is in the hospital, Mary Ellen feels bad for misdiagnosing Grandma's symptoms. After Erin is hired as a switchboard operator, she and her boss are able to track down Dr. Vance to take him to the hospital to tend to Grandma, who eventually makes a full recovery. After that, Dr. Vance realizes that the citizens of Walton's Mountain need a doctor and ultimately decides to stay where he is.

When Jason learns that his scholarship at Kleinberg Conservatory will be cancelled due to budget cuts, he is forced to get a job at the Dew Drop Inn, much to the displeasure of Olivia and Grandma. While at work one night, Jason meets Red Turner, the father of his old friend who died when both boys were younger. When Jason learns that Red left the music industry after Seth died, he tries his best to get him to start singing again. When Red agrees to sing again, Jason is able to get the Dew Drop Inn to be the venue for his comeback.

When a well known evangelist comes to the Mountain to lead the annual revival, Olivia hoped that upon hearing his sermon, her children, mainly Ben, and John will decide to become baptized. As things wear on, Olivia begins to understand why John has never gotten baptized and becomes happy when Ben decides to get baptized with Yancy in the river.

When John Boy prints excerpts of Hitler’s book in his newspaper, Reverend Fordwick leads a revolt and decides on burning books printed in German. However, when John Boy and Mrs. Brimmer show him that one of the books he plans on burning is a Bible, Reverend Fordwick realizes that his actions were wrong and soon apologizes for acting in haste. Meanwhile, Erin enters a beauty pageant and unfortunately doesn't win something which she blames John Boy for. Also, while working in the hospital, Mary Ellen meets an intern whom she falls in love with.

After butting head when it comes to treating the residents on the mountain, Mary Ellen soon finds herself attracted to the bachelor doctor, leaving her to question her feelings for her fiancée.

Looking for a way to make the payment on his printing press, John Boy reluctantly sells his meadow, only to learn the company plans on mining the mountain for gold ore. Meanwhile, Mary Ellen fears she failed herself and Curt when she is unable to help him perform a tachometry on Martha Rose Coverdale. She then is able to redeem herself by delivering Rosemary and Rev. Forwick's baby.

After Ike turns to Jim Bob to fix his motorcycle, he is on Cloud Nine to find to learn that he can ride the bike whenever he feels like it. When Jim Bob learns of a motorcycle race that he plans on entering, Olivia isn’t thrilled about her youngest son’s plans, but eventually lets him race. Meanwhile, after learning they are unable to have their own children, Ike and Corabeth learn they are next in line to adopt a baby. However, when they are unable to adopt a newborn, they instead decide to adopt a young girl named Aimee.

When Aunt Martha Corinne comes to visit the family, they soon become upset when she demands they do things around the house her way. When Olivia learns of Aunt Martha Corinne's domineering ways, she subtly suggests she goes home to deal with her problems. Before John Boy takes her home however, Martha Corinne asks him to take her to the old homestead so she can visit the grave sites of their deceased family members. While there however, she has a small heart attack and is soon taken back to the Walton home, so she can be around family when she dies. Upon arriving back home, Martha Corinne becomes interested in the Pony Cart Ben is making and offers to paint the cart for him when he is done building it.

112 :05x12 - The Best Christmas (Dec/09/1976)
As the Walton's prepare for Christmas, John and Olivia fear that it might be the last one they have together as a family. However, bad weather soon puts a hamper on their plans to spend the holiday together; with Grandma and Grandpa being stranded in Charlottesville, John and Jason helping Rev. Fordwick fix the church roof, and John Boy trying to help Miss Fanny and her niece out of the freezing river, with Curt and Mary Ellen arriving to help out. After everything is cleared up, everyone, with the exception of Grandma and Grandpa, are able to arrive home late in the night on Christmas Eve. It isn’t until they come through the door early Christmas morning, does Olivia declare this to be the family’s best Christmas holiday she can remember.

113 :05x13 - The Last Mustang (Dec/16/1976)
When Sheriff Bridges begins campaigning to be re-elected, Glen Oldfield, an outsider comes to the mountain, intent on giving the sheriff some competition for the job. It doesn’t take long for the new man to begin charming the residents to make the sheriff fear that they will forget how faithfully he has served the county and how good a job he has done while in office. It is John Boy who soon discovers the newcomer’s intention of using the office of sheriff as a stepping stone into the State Assembly and then publishes the story in his paper; causing the man to lose the election to Sheriff Bridges. Meanwhile, Grandpa soon gets in his own argument when a store owner catches a wild mustang, intent on selling it that Zeb accuses him of chasing the animal off Walton land.

114 :05x14 - The Rebellion (Dec/23/1976)
When Olivia becomes bored of how she is living her life, she wants to change her look; she decides to let Corabeth perm her hair. Thinking that she looks good after leaving Ike’s store, Olivia soon arrives home and when the family sees her new hair do, begins laughing and ultimately hurting her feelings. However, seeing that Olivia truly wants to do something different than what they do everyday, John takes her to a hotel in a nearby town for a little vacation. Meanwhile, when Grandma learns that Reverend Fordwick plans on letting Zelda Maynard play the church organ on Sundays, she becomes furious and threatens to change religions unless he withdraws his offer to Zelda. Grandma soon calms down and agrees to share the organ playing.

115 :05x15 - The Ferris Wheel (Jan/06/1977)
When Elizabeth begins having nightmares and to sleepwalk, the family starts to worry something might be wrong with her. They soon discover Elizabeth’s nightmare is of being stuck on a Ferris wheel, and is unable to get off. It doesn’t take long for John Boy to realize the root of her dream was when the carnival was in town, when Elizabeth got lost and was found in the river by the family. It is only with the help of the family that Elizabeth is able to remember what happened that day, and everyone learns she witnessed a carnival worker hiding some jewelry he stole from the Baldwin sisters, which they are able to recover. Meanwhile, Ben is having his own problem when he realizes that Erin and Jim Bob are taller than he is. Trying to find a way to grow a few inches, he decides to buy a pair of shoes that are guaranteed to help his height problems.

116 :05x16 - The Elopement (Jan/13/1977)
When Chad Morgan, an old beau of Erin arrives on the mountain, he surprises the Walton's when he tells them about purchasing some property to build a house on so he can marry Erin. Feeling that Erin is too young to get married at 16, John and Olivia try to dissuade her from accepting Chad’s proposal. Not listening to what they’re saying, the couple soon decides to elope. However, while they are on their way to the Justice of the Peace, Erin realizes that she doesn’t want to leave her family to get married like this, and soon asks him to bring her back home. Meanwhile, as Ike and Corabeth get ready to visit some relatives in a nearby town, they have Jason tend to the store while they are away. Leaving specific instructions behind not to give credit to strangers stopping in, Jason soon learns Maude Gromley wasn’t able to purchase on credit as well, only after selling her some flower seeds and paint. When Maude learns of the predicament Jason is in, she sends some of her paintings to the store in hopes of selling them to settle her bill.

117 :05x17 - John's Crossroad (Jan/20/1977)
With little work coming in the mill, money soon becomes tight, forcing John to take a government job in an office in Charlottesville. It doesn’t take long for John to find out working in an office isn’t for him, especially when he learns the employees are to work quietly at their desks and that they have to stay until the boss leaves. As John is trying to cope with his new job surroundings, Olivia tries to get used to him working in the city, and Grandpa not having Grandma around, especially when he thinks the children don’t want his company. When Elizabeth becomes interested in going along with Grandpa on his adventures, Olivia isn’t thrilled, and quickly tells Grandpa not to encourage Elizabeth to continue acting like a tomboy.

118 :05x18 - The Career Girl (Jan/27/1977)
After Erin graduates from high school, she soon realizes that she doesn't know what to do with her life, unlike Jason, Mary Ellen and John Boy. Frustrated at the thought of being labeled by the family as “the pretty one”, Erin soon finds her the perfect career path to follow: while looking for a typewriter for John Boy to use to type his novel on, Erin soon finds one in working condition at a business school and offers to work as a receptionist and book keeper as payment of the typewriter. When John Boy realizes she is working at the school, he tells her that office work is what she is best suited for and soon makes a deal for her tuition with the person in charge so Erin can attend school there.

119 :05x19 - The Hero (Feb/03/1977)
While researching how the Jefferson County "Doughboys" arrived home after World War One for his paper, John Boy discovers Sheriff Bridges was awarded several medals for his actions overseas. However, when John Boy asks for an interview, the sheriff is reluctant to answer his questions, since he doesn’t consider himself a hero, and because he doesn’t want to remember the killings and his lives being lost. Upon doing more research into the sheriff’s time in the military, John Boy is able to find an old flame of his who was an ambulance driver in the war, and ask her to visit the man. When she arrives, Sarah soon gets reacquainted with him. Meanwhile, the Walton’s Mountain Honor Day festivities begin and Ben makes a special memorial for his uncle Ben.

120 :05x20 - The Inferno (Feb/10/1977)
When John Boy wins a newspaper contest, he has the opportunity to cover the landing of the Hindenburg and interview a German immigrant for his newspaper. However, when he and the other onlookers attempt to save the passengers of the airship, John Boy soon realizes that he is unable to find the words to form an article to put in the paper. While this is happening, Curt finds that his new family is severely cutting into the time alone he would like to spend with Mary Ellen. When John and Olivia share that when they were first married, that they had the same problem, they suggest placing a potted plant outside their door to signify time they would like to spend alone. Mary Ellen and Curt soon go home to try this idea out to see if it can work for them.

121 :05x21 - The Heartbreaker (Feb/17/1977)
Curt's sister comes to visit and soon drops a bombshell that she left her husband to pursue a singing career. When Jason stops by to meet Vanessa one day, a friendship is soon forged between them, thanks to their shared interest in music. When she is singing one night with Jason's band at the Dew Drop Inn, a well known singer arrives with his manager and decides to leave with them, ultimately breaking Jason's heart. Also, seeing that the circulation of The Blue Ridge Chronicle isn't growing, Ben and John Boy decide to print some of Grandpa's stories inside the paper.

After spending too much time missing Grandma, Grandpa decides it is time for her to come home, even though her doctors advise against it. When he and John arrive back home without Grandma, he soon becomes depressed and the family works to get his spirits back up. Meanwhile, Corabeth advises Aimee not to spend time with Elizabeth, when all she wants to do is play with the other children on the mountain instead of being turned into a proper young lady.

123 :05x23 - The Hiding Place (Mar/03/1977)
When Hilary, a relative of the Baldwin sisters comes to the mountain, John Boy gets excited at the opportunity of getting her opinion on what Hitler’s actions in Germany, since she lives over there and is married a German business owner. However, he soon becomes frustrated when Hilary refuses to answer any of his questions. It soon appears that the reason why she refuses to be interviewed for John Boy’s paper is because of how she was running from the violence that Hitler’s troops are starting. Soon realizing that she can’t run from what is happening in Europe, Hilary decides to return to her husband in Germany to face the violence head on.

After having an argument with John Boy, Ben becomes a used car salesman. While he is successful at his job, the family begins to question his techniques, especially after selling Mrs. Brimmer a broken-down car. Realizing what he did was wrong, Ben soon quits and helps Jim Bob fix her car. Meanwhile, Sarah comes back to Walton's Mountain and with Olivia's help, sets out to get Sheriff Bridges to marry her.

When John Boy goes to New York to find out if his novel was lost en route to the publishing house, he soon learns that it is in a pile of unread manuscripts. John Boy then is successful in convincing the publisher to print his book. When he returns to Walton's Mountain, John Boy informs his family about his novel being published, and that he plans on moving to New York to begin working on his next manuscript.
