152 :07x01 - The Empty Nest (1) (Sep/21/1978)
Following the death of Grandpa, John confides in Olivia that the house isn’t the same with him gone, especially now that Erin and Mary Ellen have moved into an apartment in Charlottesville. Meanwhile, Ben begins growing a moustache like Grandpa’s, believing that it will garner him some respect. He soon begins helping John fill a large lumber that will help out paying a loan that was taken out by Grandpa to pay Grandma’s medical bills. While at Ike’s, he and Corabeth begin arguing over the use of the back room; since he wants to keep his pool table there and she would like to open a tea room in its space. During their discussion, Olivia walks in and soon is given a gift from Mrs. Brimmer’s niece and begins reminiscing with Corabeth about the time spent with their deceased friend. Meanwhile, at their apartment in Charlottesville, Mary Ellen and Erin begin to wonder what their family is doing at home.

153 :07x02 - The Empty Nest (2) (Sep/21/1978)
In the conclusion, Jim Bob fixes up a jukebox hoping to sell it to Mrs. Dunbar for her rooming house while Ben is successful in filling the large lumber order. Elsewhere, John is able to convince other small lumber mills to form a co-op so they can compete against the larger companies, while Ike and Corabeth compromise on the use of the back room in the store. In Charlottesville, a surprise visit from Erin’s drunken boss leads the girls to return to the Mountain. The family then heads up to Grandpa’s grave to commemorate his birthday and then think back to events that happened while he was still alive.

154 :07x03 - The Calling (Sep/28/1978)
When Mary Francis, the Baldwin sister’s young cousin comes to stay with them for a while, she soon befriends Jim Bob when he is able to get the kite she was flying out of a tree. Not long after that happens, they begin dating. As soon as Corabeth learns about the new romance, she becomes shocked, because Mary Francis is not a Baptist and will soon be joining a Catholic convent. It doesn’t take long for Mary Francis to begin to doubt if she is making the wrong decision. However, all it takes is a visit from two nuns from the school she will be attending to make Jim Bob see that Mary Francis’ calling is just like his dream of becoming a pilot and accepts the girl’s decision to become a nun. Meanwhile, when Ben hires a new worker to help out at the mill, he soon finds that the man is an alcoholic and has to let him go when he attempts to destroy the mill.

155 :07x04 - The Moonshiner (Oct/12/1978)
Upon his arrival on the mountain, Boone Walton gets in trouble by selling some bootleg whiskey. After Jason pays his fine and promises to keep an eye on the elderly man, Boone begins working at the mill after his sentence gets suspended. Upon his arrival at the Walton home, Boone comes to the rescue of the Baldwin sisters when they loose the recipe of their Recipe. However, it doesn’t take long for the old man to wear out his welcome, since Boone makes a still on one part of the mountain and comes home one night drunk with Jason. While this is going on, Daisy, John Boy’s old fiancée, comes to the mountain to return his ring. However, when Corabeth learns that her daughter Melissa came with Daisy, she refuses to let Aimee play with her, calling the girl a “love child.”

Wanting to pass her nursing exams in order to spend more time with Curt, Mary Ellen persuades David to give her some “pep pills” to help her stay awake long enough to study. However, she soon becomes addicted to them and eventually has an accident, prompting her to ask for help to overcome the addiction. When she passes the exam to become a registered nurse, Curt arrives at her graduation ceremony to surprise her. Meanwhile, tiring of life on the mountain, Yancy’s wife turns to Elizabeth for help in filing a divorce. Elsewhere, Jason sets up a swing for Melissa to play on at Daisy’s home.

157 :07x06 - The Changeling (Oct/26/1978)
It’s Elizabeth’s 13th birthday and strange things begin happening on the mountain. When Corabeth suggests that the events are caused by a poltergeist, John and Olivia quickly shoot down that idea, but begin suspecting that Elizabeth is controlling the odd things. Things soon reach a fever-pitch at her birthday party after Aimee tells a ghost story, and when a scared Elizabeth tells her parents that she is frightened of growing up, do things calm down. While this is happening, Jason gets a job at a nearby radio station as “Cousin George,” a radio personality who gives out advice to people who write about their problems. However, after realizing he has no experience in handing out advice about love problems, he soon gets fired.

158 :07x07 - The Portrait (Nov/02/1978)
When Erin meets a young painter who recently came home from the war, she becomes restless with her life on Walton’s Mountain. After meeting Derek, Erin’s family and neighbors find him to be a puzzling individual with his distrusting behavior. As they grow closer, Derek calls Erin by his old girlfriend’s name, causing her to run, confused by his words. It doesn’t take long for Erin and the rest of the mountain to learn about him; after Derek gives Corabeth some paintings as collateral for goods in the store, she, Olivia, and Mary Ellen see how depressing they are. Mary Ellen soon learns that he is a psychiatric patient from a veteran’s hospital who refused medical treatment and then left. When she arrives home to tell the family about what they learn Erin is gone. When they find her with Derek, he breaks down and tells them what he saw in the war and soon goes back to the hospital. Elsewhere, Elizabeth and Jim Bob purchase a canary to give to Grandma as a pet, but are unable to make it sing.

159 :07x08 - The Captive (Nov/09/1978)
Wanting to learn how to drive, Elizabeth turns to her brothers to be her teacher. However, when John tells her she can drive with a responsible adult in the car; Jim Bob, Ben, and Jason soon begin yelling at her for getting into trouble. John is further upset when Elizabeth goes driving with the Baldwin sisters and ultimately runs over the family vegetable garden. Meanwhile, Corabeth has become unhappy with her life on Walton’s Mountain and begins wishing for things to be like they were in Doe Hill. When her friends and family begin noticing how erratic her behavior is, they are unaware of Corabeth’s growing alcohol problem and get a surprise when she opens a dance studio in Rockfish. The truth comes out when Elizabeth gets caught by John and Olivia driving Aimee and Corabeth home.

160 :07x09 - The Illusion (Nov/16/1978)
As Ike displays his Roll of Honor, a list Walton’s Mountain men who are serving in the military, Verdie notices that the black men aren’t listed near the names of the white men, but fails to voice her displeasure in the arrangement of the names. Her displeasure mounts when Corabeth suggests that the black women on the mountain should form their own Ladies Auxiliary to show their support for the troops, and she mentions that they are already doing their part for the war effort. Elsewhere, Erin runs into Verdie’s daughter Esther when she is on her way home from J.D.’s plant. After working there for a few days, Erin finds working conditions difficult and soon suggests to J.D. that Esther would make the perfect personnel director, except he is hesitant to hire her because of her color. After the girls persuade him to hire her, Verdie confronts Ike and asks him to put her son’s name in its rightful spot or take it off the Roll of Honor all together.

When an old beau of Grandma comes to visit, he passes on his condolences about Grandpa’s death. The two then begin getting close again, having shared similar experiences in losing loved ones and having health problems and start dating, much to Elizabeth’s shock. When he begins making plans to begin a life with Esther, she tells that while enjoying his company; she doesn’t want to leave her life and family on the mountain. While this is going on, Corabeth tells Jim Bob that the government plans on starting a gasoline rationing program. Thinking of ways to have cars run on something other than gas, he teams up with Yancy to distill alcohol that is safe to fuel cars with.

As Christmas is approaching Walton’s Mountain in 1941, Mary Ellen is getting ready to go to Pearl Harbor to be with Curt. However, her plans are put on hold when news is broadcasted on the radio that Pearl Harbor was attacked. Not know whether Curt died in Hawaii, Mary Ellen and the rest of the family head home to wait for news. In the meantime, Olivia becomes worried when the boys begin talking about what branch of the service they would like to join once American joins the war. Upon hearing that President Roosevelt declared war on Japan for the attacks, Verdie arrives at the Walton’s to tell them that Jody was still alive, that he only was injured in the attacks. Unfortunately for Mary Ellen, Jim Bob arrives with a telegram to inform her about Curt’s death. While this is happening, Ben goes on his first date with Cindy, much to the displeasure of Olivia.

When Andrew March, the new minister on the mountain moves into his house, he finds a skunk living under the floorboards. After getting sprayed by his unexpected visitor, Rev. March moves in with the Walton’s while his house airs out. During his stay however, Elizabeth develops a crush on him and soon writes him a love letter, and signs it “E”. Upon reading the letter, Andy thinks Erin wrote it, and soon discovers that the girl who has feelings for him is Elizabeth. After talking with him, Elizabeth soon becomes ashamed of her actions when Andy doesn’t share the same feelings. Meanwhile, the Baldwin sisters turn to Erin for help in turning their father’s journals into a novel and hopefully a movie starring Katherine Hepburn and Bette Davis. However, as they read the journals, Miss Emily learns that her beau Ashley Longworth wrote a letter to her, but was hidden by her papa. Furious at what was done, Emily decides to take down his picture. In doing so, she finds the letter and a ring to commemorate their first kiss.

When Ben begins making all the decisions regarding the mill, John becomes upset with him. However, once John gives Ben a piece of his mind, Ben takes offense and moves into Zuleika Dunbar's boarding house and decides to start up a business venture with Ike and Corabeth. While they are able to acquire a loan to open a string of guest cottages to house workers of a nearby factory, the war department informs them that due to the war, their project can’t proceed. Not to be discouraged, Ben decides to move the cottages from the original location and when they are able to get tenants, he goes back to work with John at the mill. As this is going on, Yancy makes up his mind to get a barbering degree, but nobody is willing to be his first client.

With John Boy stationed in London as a reporter for the Stars and Stripes newspaper, Jim Bob and Ben begin talking about their desire to join the military. However, when they are told by John why they can’t join up, Jim Bob goes to town to get an Air-Core tattoo. When John and Olivia find out about, they aren’t too thrilled and tell him he has to live with the decision of getting it and their feelings for the rest of his life. Meanwhile, as his graduation draws closer, Jason begins to feel the pressure to join up. Not happy at the contemplation of killing another person, he goes to the recruitment office to learn about becoming a conscientious objector. After being taunted by some guys who walk into the office and later by at home by Ben, Jason turns to John for advice and then decides to finish college and then join the army.

When Mary Ellen and Erin arrive home with a letter from John Boy, they see Ben and Ike practicing an act for their USO audition. In the letter, John Boy is concerned about his friend Mike, who was sent home after being injured in Europe and hasn’t replied back to any of his letters. Upon learning that Mike has been transferred to a hospital in Richmond, Mary Ellen goes to visit him to learn about his condition. When she finds him in a wheelchair and that he is ready to go home, she invites him to Walton’s Mountain to stay with her family while he builds up his confidence. After helping around the house and mill, Mike’s self-esteem takes a beating when J.D. won’t hire him since he’s in a wheelchair, but can have a job when he begins to walk again. With the help of the Walton’s, Mike is able to regain the use of his legs and goes back for his job, much to the surprise of J.D.

With all the work John has been doing away from home, Olivia has become worried about his health, since he is always tired. After looking to spend more time with John since he now travels so much, Jason suggests Olivia go along with him on his next trip. While they are gone, John becomes worried when Olivia becomes flushed and suggests they go to her aunt Kate’s doctor in nearby Alberene. When they return home her check-up, Kate shows up to break the bad news that Olivia has tuberculosis and needs to be taken to a sanatorium to treat it. Meanwhile, after cleaning out Zuleka’s attic Jim Bob comes home with an according, determined to learn how to play it while Grandma teaches Elizabeth how to cook

168 :07x17 - The Burden (Jan/25/1979)
After Olivia left home, John has become increasing worried about how Jim Bob has been running with the wrong crowd. He soon gets into trouble with Corabeth when he almost runs her down. When she goes over to the Walton’s to give John a piece of her mind, Jim Bob overhears her complaints and attempts to defend what happened by saying his car had no breaks. After John orders him to fix the breaks, he gets trapped under the car when it falls off the jack that Jim Bob placed it on, and he is able to escape injury. At this point, he takes what happened as a sign that God wants him to change his ways, so he decides to become a preacher. However, when he finds out how much schooling has to be done in order to get a degree, he changes his mind. When John and Grandma find out what is causing Jim Bob to think this way, they soon have a heart-to-heart talk with him.

When Mary Ellen returns to work following Curt’s death, John and the others begin taking care of John Curtis while she is gone. Mary Ellen soon becomes extremely overprotective of him when the son of an old friend dies after accidentally dies when she was out of the room. After that, Mary Ellen abruptly decides to stop working again to watch John Curtis round the clock. Meanwhile, Ben is taking some candid photos of life around the mountain and soon takes a picture of Erin with skimpy shorts on. After having the roll developed, Ike suggests he send the photos in to the Charlottesville newspaper. Forgetting about the picture of Erin, the pictures are sent into the contest and that one wins, leaving John and Olivia furious at what they see it. When some officers at the nearby army base invite Erin to a dance, John is hesitant to let her go, but eventually consents. It is after Erin leaves for the dance that Mary Ellen and John discover John Curtis is missing, and soon find him on a rope bridge.

170 :07x19 - The Attack (Feb/15/1979)
While the war in Europe is raging on, Ike has become increasingly worried about the food shortages happening in his store due to rationing. As a result, he has a heart attack and is given advice by Dr. Spencer to relax if he expects to make a full recovery. However, Corabeth to become extremely concerned about Ike going back to the store and having another attack that she decides to sell it so they can move into a cottage near the ocean. In the meantime, Jason and the other Walton kids take it upon themselves to keep Ike’s store open for him while he is in the hospital. One of the things that Ben and Jim Bob do is make molasses out of the sorghum that grows to replace the short supply of sugar. After Ike and Corabeth return to the mountain, they are impressed at the job the kids did and ultimately decide to stay on the mountain.

As Erin helps the Baldwin sisters write their memoirs, they begin discussing how much space should be devoted to Miss Emily’s old beau Ashley Longworth. After she goes home after hearing their discussion, Erin has a run-in with a naval man who splashes some mud on her dress. It is after he apologizes that he goes over to see the Baldwin’s, giving the sisters a shock when they see his face. When Erin arrives the next day, she quickly learns that the man is Ashley’s son and that he came to give Miss Emily a letter written by his father years ago. Meanwhile, Elizabeth is experiencing some growing pains, since she isn’t sure if she wants to grow up or stay a kid. At this point, John talks to Olivia on the phone about how Elizabeth is feeling, and she soon sends her daughter a special gift to help her feel better.

When Ben arrives home in the early hours of the morning with Cindy, he surprises the family when he tells them that they got married in Maryland. Their surprise increases when Cindy chimes in to say that she is looking forward to being in such a large family, since she is an only child. The next morning, John tells Ben that he should call Olivia right away before she hears the news from someone else. After John and the rest of the family throw a celebratory dinner, Cindy and Ben begin having problems. After he tells her that she shouldn’t spend the money that her father sends her and a few other minor things, Ben announces that he and Cindy are breaking up. All it takes is some advice from Grandma to get the newlyweds back on track, with Ben agreeing to respect Cindy and Cindy acknowledging that it is alright for Ben to voice his opinion on how to decorate their home. Elsewhere, when Corabeth learns of an old fountain from Doe Hill is for sale, she is able to convince Ike to buy it for her.

When Jason learns that the owner of the Dew Drop has sold the business, he becomes concerned about losing his job. However, once he meets Callie May, the new owner, his concerns are moved to other things: such as her intentions of stealing John away from Olivia when the children discover they dated for a while before John and Olivia got married. Callie then has a change in heart after a talk with Ike and meeting the rest of the Walton family and stops pursuing John. Meanwhile, Cindy, Elizabeth, and Erin help Ike transform his hall into a canteen for the soldiers at Camp Rockfish to relax at.

174 :07x23 - The Talespin (Mar/15/1979)
When Jim Bob is flying a paper airplane that he made out of a graded assignment, it lands near John. When he sees the poor grade that Jim Bob received on it, John tells Jim Bob that he isn’t happy to learn that he is failing English and doing as bad in his other subjects as well. When Elizabeth suggests that he go ask Corabeth for help, which Jim Bob reluctantly does. Unfortunately, things continue to go bad for Jim Bob when he gets stopped by a sheriff when he runs a stop sign and learns that his license recently expired. When he takes a vision test in order to get it back, Jim Bob discovers he needs glasses to help correct his vision. At this point, Jim Bob decides to quit school to join the army. However, when Corabeth talks with John about him, Jim Bob insults her, causing John to angrily sign the papers Jim Bob needs to join up. However, when Jim Bob is on his way to the recruitment office, he finds Corabeth on the side of the road with a flat tire. When he stops to help out, they have a heart to heart that causes Jim Bob to return home and go back to school. Also, an old friend of Curt comes to visit Mary Ellen and they soon realize they enjoy one another’s company.

As Jason struggles to complete his composition for his final exam, his family continually interrupts his work. When he goes to the Baldwin’s home in an attempt to find peace and quiet, the sisters are having a discussion about who should be entrusted with the recipe after they’re gone. At this point, they suggest the mountain should organize a celebration to honor the pioneers who first came to the mountain. Things get sticky when the sisters and Ike find documents that show each of their ancestors were the first to settle on Walton’s mountain, causing Ike and the Baldwin’s to want change the name of the mountain. Luckily, things get settled when Grandma brings out an old family journal showing once and for all that the Walton’s were the first to arrive on the mountain. After this, the Baldwin’s decide to have the celebration at the Walton home. Meanwhile, when Jason is able to finish his musical piece, his professor isn’t thrilled that it has a mountain sound to it. The professor then changes his mind on it when he arrives for the celebration and praises Jason for the job he did on it.
