As John and Olivia's 20th wedding anniversary approaches, the children decide to paint a picture of the house and paint themselves in various places in it as a special present to their parents. Meanwhile, John and Olivia decide to commemorate the special day by renewing their vows. Meanwhile, at school, John Boy volunteers to be an escort to Madeline Bennett, a visiting writer, when she comes to speak at the university. Once her speaking engagement is done, a romance between them begins and John Boy decides abruptly to leave school to be with her. However, as he thinks about leaving, John Boy decides against it and stays in school to finish his education.
