When Selina Linville, an old flame of John Boy's, comes back to Walton's Mountain, the two start going together. However, things aren't the same between them, especially when Selina calls John Boy a coward when he won't go with her to write about the Spanish Civil War. Things ultimately get better when John Boy speaks his mind and tells Selina that he's already fighting a war, a war against the depression and asks her to stay on the mountain and transfer to Boatwright University. Also, while this is going on, Elizabeth feels that her new friend Ariel is always bragging about what beautiful things she has to make her feel jealous. However, when Elizabeth learns that Ariel is an orphan and lives with her aunt, she isn't mad and still wants to be friends with her.
