After Dr. Vance announces his intention of leaving Walton's mountain because of being unable to pay his taxes, Grandma gets sick with an acute appendicitis and ultimately needs an operation. While she is in the hospital, Mary Ellen feels bad for misdiagnosing Grandma's symptoms. After Erin is hired as a switchboard operator, she and her boss are able to track down Dr. Vance to take him to the hospital to tend to Grandma, who eventually makes a full recovery. After that, Dr. Vance realizes that the citizens of Walton's Mountain need a doctor and ultimately decides to stay where he is.
