With little work coming in the mill, money soon becomes tight, forcing John to take a government job in an office in Charlottesville. It doesn’t take long for John to find out working in an office isn’t for him, especially when he learns the employees are to work quietly at their desks and that they have to stay until the boss leaves. As John is trying to cope with his new job surroundings, Olivia tries to get used to him working in the city, and Grandpa not having Grandma around, especially when he thinks the children don’t want his company. When Elizabeth becomes interested in going along with Grandpa on his adventures, Olivia isn’t thrilled, and quickly tells Grandpa not to encourage Elizabeth to continue acting like a tomboy.
