Following the death of Grandpa, John confides in Olivia that the house isn’t the same with him gone, especially now that Erin and Mary Ellen have moved into an apartment in Charlottesville. Meanwhile, Ben begins growing a moustache like Grandpa’s, believing that it will garner him some respect. He soon begins helping John fill a large lumber that will help out paying a loan that was taken out by Grandpa to pay Grandma’s medical bills. While at Ike’s, he and Corabeth begin arguing over the use of the back room; since he wants to keep his pool table there and she would like to open a tea room in its space. During their discussion, Olivia walks in and soon is given a gift from Mrs. Brimmer’s niece and begins reminiscing with Corabeth about the time spent with their deceased friend. Meanwhile, at their apartment in Charlottesville, Mary Ellen and Erin begin to wonder what their family is doing at home.

Episode Quotes

(Opening Narration)
The Narrator: For as long as any of us could remember our house had stood in the shadow of Waltons Mountain. We counted time by its seasons, growing up and growing old, and even those of us who went away never really left it. It was a fitting place for my grandfather to be buried, and in the six months since his death we had learned to live with our grief. We never looked up at the mountain without feeling his strength. We were to need it: the year was 1941 and there was a tension in the air that threatened to pull us apart.
