Episode Recap

When John and Harley are stopped in a small town due to truck trouble, trouble abounds for them. Refusing to serve him based on the color of his skin, Harley and John go off. Once getting their truck fixed and returning home, Sheriff Bridges suspects that Harley is an escaped convict who killed a man numerous years ago.

When they arrive back on Walton's Mountain, Sheriff Bridges informs the men that Harley is suspected of being an escaped convict who once killed a man and plans on taking him to jail. However, when John hides him at the mill, he is given the ultimatum of turning over Harley or going to jail him-self when the Sheriff returns.

Upon hearing that Sheriff Bridges arrested John, Harley turns himself in to save his friend. After being released from jail, John goes to talk to President Roosevelt to see if he could clear Harley, and is successful in getting the President in signing a pardon for Harley. After John leaves and arrives back home, Verdie goes over to tell John about hearing on the radio of the President's death.

While this is happening, Cindy is disappointed when Erin, Elizabeth, and Mary Ellen won't allow her to help out around the house, but eventually is able to persuade them to let her help out with the chores. In addition to that, Elizabeth and her boyfriend are having relationship problems because of how she has been neglecting him. Lastly, Ike and Corabeth are arguing over her newest career endeavor: becoming a real estate agent; because he would like her to be a stay at home wife. They eventually work out their differences and Ike sets up an office for her in the store.

The episode ends with the Walton’s standing on a train station platform, waiting to pay their respects to President Roosevelt as a train travels throughout the country for the citizens to pay their respects for the great man.
