When Stanley Perkins, an old beau of Rose's, comes to Walton's Mountain unexpectedly, he begins to tell everyone about how he received a gold watch after retiring from his successful job in the city. However, Rose and others begin to worry about Stanley when they see how disheveled he looks. It is soon discovered by Rose that he spent time in a mental institution, being treated for a nervous breakdown. When Stanley’s sister finds out he has been in Walton’s Mountain, she soon makes her way over to the mountain to find him and try to convince him to go home with her. However, Stanley decides to stay on the mountain, where he soon finds a job at a local newspaper.
Meanwhile, hoping to pick up business at the Dew Drop Inn, Jason decides to hire a Country-Western singer to entertain his customers with live entertainment. However, Jason soon learns that the singer he hired has eyes for Toni, and he ultimately quits after Jason gives him a hard time for spending time with her. Worried about how the singer quit while there are people waiting to hear him sing, Jason and Toni ultimately go on stage and sing a duet to cover for not having any other entertainment and are a huge success.
