Many of the school that Carver played were real high schools. Some are mentioned by name and get mistaken for other schools. In the episode Pregnant Pause Bellfower is mentioned and Jefferson is seen posing as Bellflower.

The series was network television's first drama to feature a predominantly black cast. It is the third longest running drama with a black cast cast trailing only Soul Food and The Wire.

The cast actually sung during the shower scenes.

Three of the cast members went on to be directors. Thomas Carter, who directed the basketball movie Coach Carter. Timothy Van Patton, who directed and wrote on The Sopranos. Kevin Hooks directed Homicide, Lost, 24, 21 Jump Street and others. He is the only one of the three to have an Emmy.

Wolfe Perry was a standout player for Stanford University.
