Lawmen, headed by Sheriff Lew Wallace, arrive at the Yellow Rose to arrest John Stronghart, a Comanche ranch hand, for involvement in a border dope-smuggling incident that resulted in the death of a deputy sheriff. Elder son Roy Champion and his lawyer brother, Quisto, promise that Stronghart will make a full statement to County Prosecutor Pierce. As they leave, Stronghart urges Roy to find Sanchez, the man they really want

While in the process of rounding up their cattle, Roy, Chance, Whit, Dillard, and Coryell are awoken at dawn by the sound of rapid gunfire intentionally set off to create a wild stampede. Dillard chases and catches the man they believe responsible for the ruckus bringing him back to The Yellow Rose. Roy Champion confronts Jeb Hollister for sending the man to do the dirty work. The man, after all, admitted to the crime, was riding a Hollister branded horse and was carrying a Hollister-owned rifle. Meanwhile, Quisto rounds up some cattle transport trucks but is foiled when Jeb later gives the contractor a blank check and tells him to rip up his contract. Foul play ensues when Colleen’s truck loses its brakes and a rescue saves her life. Roy attacks Toland and calls off their deal. The Champions, instead, decide to move their cattle by herding it cross-country.
