Michael's father, Leo, comes to visit, bringing bad news. He has terminal cancer and has come to town to try an experimental new treatment. Michael is devastated by the news and takes advice from Hope, Melissa and Gary. Meanwhile, his stepmother Linda struggles to get closer to Michael.
Michael's brother Brad comes to stay with him to help with the funeral arrangements for Leo, their father. Brad has been running the family firm and when Michael finds out about the state of the business finances, their already strained relationship reaches flashpoint.
Ethan seems to be reacting badly to his parents' separation. He has nightmares and pushes away his mother. Nancy worries about him while Elliott reluctantly agrees to go on a date with a friend of Ellyn's.
Nancy agrees to go out with a single father from school, she's excited and nervous and turns to her girlfriends for reassurance. Elliott is surprised to hear the news and finds an excuse to turn up at the house just as Nancy is getting ready for her big night out.

As Michael and Hope discuss their conflicting views on how to celebrate the holiday season, Elliot and Nancy worry about how to deal with their first Christmas since the separation.

An old school friend of Michael's comes into town and suggests meeting to talk about some business. He wants to hire Michael and Elliot to work on a political campaign for a right-wing, pro-death penalty candidate. Michael feels compromised but accepts the deal, much to the indignation of his family and friends.
The loss of a major client puts Michael and Elliot's business in serious danger of going under. But there's good news for Melissa, who is hired to shoot the cover of (guest star) Carly Simon's new album.
As they reluctantly close down their business, Michael and Elliot remember the highs and lows of their personal and professional relationships.
Susannah and Gary's affair takes a surprising turn. While they struggle to know what the implications could be, Nancy struggles to balance her work and family life.

While the work project makes little progress, Elliot is more than satisfied with what he achieves. And Ellyn's bravado is put to the test in the great outdoors.
Miles Drentell lets Elliot and Michael know that he wants them to come and work for him at his agency. Although it's not what either of them want. Elliot is willing to bow his head and agree but Michael is too proud to give in to the offer.
He takes a creative writing class and is encouraged to try to work on the novel he has always wanted to write. But Nancy, his fellow student, finds it easier to impress the teacher than Michael and he wonders if it's time to play to his real strengths, swallow his pride and get back to advertising.
Michael and Elliot agree to a formal meeting with Miles Drentell about working for his advertising agency. But Michael is called out of the office to go to meet Hope at her doctor's appointment - there's bad news about the pregnancy. And Michael and Elliot feel very uncomfortable about working for Miles.
Melissa spends time with her family and has to face up to the fact that her beloved grandmother is fading. Old age is catching up with her health, her ability to run her own business and she's becoming more awkward and cantankerous. And a generous birthday gift brings family tensions to boiling point.
Meanwhile, Ellyn feels the benefit of her ongoing medical treatment.
Nancy is delighted with the publishing deal for her book but is completely taken aback when Elliot comes around and tells her he wants to get back together. Best friend Hope is very much against the idea and is happy to see Nancy's relationship with new man Matt progressing but is Nancy really happy with her new life?
