Episode Quotes

(Elizabeth rings Hyacinth's doorbell and Hyacinth answers)
Hyacinth: Oh, it's you Elizabeth! (Looks at her watch) A tiny bit early perhaps, but do come in.
Elizabeth: I thought it was 3:25.
Hyacinth: Well, not quite dear.
Elizabeth: My watch says 3:25.
Hyacinth: Oh that watch, yes, I expect it would.

Hyacinth: (Referring to Daisy and Onslow) It's so thoughtless to look as poor as they do.

Hyacinth: My word. Doesn't someone look smarter than she did earlier. Something new dear?
Elizabeth: No, no, I've had it ages.
Hyacinth: Oh yes, I can see you have now.

(Hyacinth's doorbell has rung, but she is on the telephone.)
Hyacinth: Elizabeth would you see to that for me dear? Kindly inform whoever it is that I am at home and that I will receive them momentarily.

(Elizabeth is struggling to open the door's lock)
Hyacinth: It's a security latch. There's a little button. Richard had it installed, to protect me from anyone desperate.
Elizabeth: (Under her breath) They would have to be.

Hyacinth: . . . that swine Bruce, wants my sister to wear some awful leather outfit.
Richard: (Chuckles) Is he going to take her motorcycling?
Hyacinth: No, it's not motorcycling; it's something he picked up in Spain.
Richard: (Confused) What? Bullfighting?

Richard: You'll never guess who I bumped into.
Hyacinth: Good! Would you polish those glasses for me dear?

Cultural References

Onslow: (Referring to Hyacinth) Queen Mother's outside.

The title of 'Queen Mother' means that the person is both the mother of the current monarch, and a former Queen consort (wife of a King).

Visual: Daisy's mug.

This is an image of Rambo, Sylvester Stallone's Green Beret character from the Rambo trilogy of films.

Hyacinth: There must be a card from my sister in Tenerfie.

Tenerife is the largest among the Canary Islands, which are Spanish owned islands off the coast of Northern Africa in the Atlantic Ocean, as seen here.

Richard: Would you, uh, like me to lock the car?
Hyacinth: I think so, don't you? We're practically in Beirut.

Beirut, the capital and largest city of Lebanon, has long been associated with the violence and brutality that comes from being part of a war-torn nation. It suffered a long civil war for nearly twenty years, and as a result, many sitcoms have used it as a reference point for dilapidation, as seen here.

Hyacinth: . . . give me a hand with buffing up the cruet.

Hyacinth uses a strange choice of words here, since a 'cruet' has a particularly religious meaning, as it's the name of the vessel (usually in pairs, so 'vessels' is more accurate) for holding the water and wine for the Holy Communion or Eucharist
