Hyacinth's Guest Book

Welcome to the minor character guide. Here, I will bring you an episode by episode guide of all the minor characters that have passed through Keeping Up Appearances. Why not put these in the main character guide? Simply, nearly all of these characters have only made very slight appearances, perhaps only one scene in one episode.

Please check back, as it will be updated regularly.

Daddy's Accident

  • Postman, played by Leo Dolan
    • This postman appears twice in the series: in this episode, as well as in episode four, The Charity Shop. Both times Hyacinth complains to him. First, in this episode, about how she hasn't received any mail, yet Elizabeth next door has. Then in the latter episode about the tongues of strangers, as well as nothing from Sheridan.
    • Memorable Quote: Maybe he's trying telepathy!

  • Mr Oxley, played by James Ottaway
    • This is the man who is in the same ward as Daddy in the hospital. Hyacinth immediately takes exception to his presence because he's wearing his hat in bed. He annoys Hyacinth further with the truth. Each time she wants to glorify Daddy being in the hospital, he's there as an eye witness to tell it like it is.
    • Memorable Quote: (Referring to Daddy) Drunk as a skunk!

  • Doctor, played by Bruce Alexander
    • He is the man who accompanies Hyacinth during her visit with Daddy. Unlike Mr Oxley, he tries to be tactful with Hyacinth with regard to Daddy. He, like so many others after him, has trouble keeping the 'Bucket'-'Bouquet' sorted in his mind.
    • Memorable Quote: Yes, that's what I thought, it was quite a chilly evening.

  • Meter man, played by Paul Toothill
    • 'The one with the funny mustache', as Hyacinth calls him, pays a visit to the Bucket residence to check the electric meter. This is our first taste of how she deals with blue collar workers: the shoes off, and while indoors, don't touch anything! His temperament is quite good and doesn't argue, rather, just agrees with everything she says, even when she wants him to do something as ludicrous as check to make sure her electricity is clean.
    • Memorable Quote: Right-o madam.

The New Vicar

  • Passer-by, played by Jill O'Hare
    • Although she only has one line, this very minor character gives us a great insight into Hyacinth's character. This being only the second episode, we perhaps – as viewers – don't yet have a clear idea of what Hyacinth is like, and here we see her bragging dimension. Not only does she tell people about her 'little social triumphs', but also more than once.
    • Memorable Quote: Several times!

  • Gypsy, played by Eileen Davies
    • This Gypsy woman calls on Onslow, who is really not interested or impressed with anything she has to offer. She then works her 'magic', enticing Rose into being told her fortune, and Daddy into running away.
    • Memorable Quote: I can see you're troubled in love.

Stately Home

  • Petrol Station Attendant, played by unknown
    • This non speaking role character embodies the frustration that Hyacinth causes so many people. Through her indecision and bossy nature, she orders Richard to keep turning around, which he does in this petrol station, each time driving over the bell, and each time bringing the attendant out for no reason. Finally, after four times, he ends up waving his fist at them as they drive off.
    • Memorable Moment: Waving his fist at them as they leave for the last time.

  • Angry woman, played by Liz Gebhardt
    • A wife of one of Rose's lovers, this is where we have a chance to see the power of Rose's manipulation. She comes over to the house in a rage, shouting at Onslow and Richard, 'Right! Where is the b***h?!' Yet, after a while of shouting, Rose not only has her calmed down, but has her sympathy as well (See quote below)
    • Memorable Quote: That Rose, she knows what sufferin' is.

  • Car Park Attendant, played by Eric Carte
    • The attendant has the unfortunate fate of coming between Hyacinth and the aristocracy. This is the first time she threatens a character with her husband's power and influence. The object of her desire? The parking space close to the home, but the attendant is steadfast in his resolve, and Richard helps bail him out. By contrast, we can see how easy and amiable the attendant is when Onslow comes on through. This serves to heighten the irrationality of Hyacinth.
    • Memorable Quote: She was murder!

  • His Lordship, played by Michael Bilton
    • After all that waiting around inside to get a peek at the aristocracy, Hyacinth comes face to face with one of them. Unfortunately for her, he's 'dressed as a gardener', which he has no right to do, according to her. Like a normal everyday man, he's out for a putter in the garden, but is disturbed by the presence of Hyacinth and Richard.
    • Memorable Quote: Can I help you? This is not a public area, you know?

  • Stately Home visitors, played by Les Clack and unknown; and Stella Kemball and unknown
    • These guests are all taken aback that they have encountered a 'friend of the family'. The first visiting couple seems to be a bit awestruck by the occasion, as we see him curtsy as he passes; whereas the second visiting couple seem to be simply joyfully surprised by the encounter.
    • Memorable Quote: Oh! Oh, I am sorry, I thought you were just visitors.

The Charity Shop

This episode contains a repeat Guest Star:

  • Homeowners, played by unknown actors
    • This non speaking role is still very essential. Hyacinth, in order to continue the illusion that all her relations are well-off, stops Elizabeth outside a nice home, claiming it to be Onslow and Daisy's. The truth, as we know, is that it isn't, so she has to make her way to their home, by first scaling the backyard wall, as observed by the homeowners. They can't believe their eyes, and when she comes back, they rush out to question her . . . if only they can catch her!
    • Memorable Moment: Gawking out of the window at Hyacinth.

  • Daddy's fiancée, played by Gretchen Franklin
    • Not many people can take on the Bucket woman and win, but this feisty little spinster certainly does. If it were not for her son, she would certainly be bunking up with Daddy as we speak. It's certainly not unlike Daddy to offer people marriage, and luckily for her . . .
    • Memorable Quote: I've got witnesses!

  • Mr Duxbury and his mate, played by Norman Lovett and Denis Bond.
    • These guys are petty criminals, and we see them unloading electronics (TVs, VCRs, etc.) out of the back of their van. When Hyacinth pulls up and asks which one is Duxbury, they point to each other, then say they've never heard of him. Dodgy indeed. Mr Duxbury is the son of Daddy's fiancée (above), but not really a loving one.
    • Memorable Quote: Back? Back?! I've only just got rid of her!
