| To begin with, one of the core cast – Emmet – is absent in this series. The 'Emmet' character added a much need dimension to the KUA world: he not only gave us another person who Hyacinth can torture, but also gave a new depth to Elizabeth. In this series, she is a little life-less and we cannot get a glimpse into her world or her thoughts. That will come later.
Furthermore, this is the only series that stars Shirley Stelfox as Rose. The character of Rose in this series has a little more depth and savvy than the one portrayed by Mary Millar for the remainder of the show.
Lastly, a large percent of this series – particularly the first few episodes – is devoted to the foundation of the characters and us getting to know their various idiosynchorcies. These key features are usually embellished as the series progresses, and in this series we can see them almost in their infancy. For example, the classic, 'The "Bouquet" residence the lady of the house speaking,' is particularly understressed, whereas viewers of series five will notice it has by that time taken on near operatic qualities. | |
