Retired Seattle deputy chief of homicide Joe Trapchek returns to work as a consultant to the force on which his grandson Chris is a detective. The opener finds the two investigating a serial-murder case.

After hearing a soon-to-be-retired cop brag about how he killed an unarmed suspect and then covered it up, Chris decides to turn him in to Internal Affairs and risk the wrath of the rest of the department. Meanwhile, Joe reopens one of his 72 unsolved homicide cases.
