The 918th Bomber Squadron is one of the elite bomber squadrons in the European theater of World War II. They get to be that way, however, in the "school of hard knocks"---bomber crews that can't do things properly, being tricked into getting their airplanes shot down, etc. When General Frank Savage, and later Colonel Joseph Gallagher, restore discipline and morale to the fliers, the squadron then starts to hit its targets and turns the tide of the war to America's favor.
