Is this series based on the film Cooley High?:
Yes. Eric Monte, who wrote the film Cooley High was hired by ABC to do a television series based on the movie. A pilot was filmed and ABC rejected it. Monte revamped the pilot and ABC picked up the series. During the closing credits of each episode, it is mentioned that the series is inspired by the film Cooley High.
 
Who from Cooley High appeared in the series?:
No one from the movie appeared in the series as the film was set in 1964 and took place in Chicago. This series took place in 1976 and in Watts section of Los Angeles, California.
The main character both the show and film share is Raj. Raj wants to be a writer like Preach of Cooley High wanted to be. Only difference between them is that Raj had one sister, while Preach had two sisters.
 
Was Rerun meant to be a white male?:
Yes. Rerun was created as a white male that loved to dance. He was rewritten when Fred Berry won the role.
 
What happen to Mabel Thomas in season 3?:
Mabel King want Raj's father to be in the series and did not like the direction the show was going. She was written out of the series for the third season and mentioned by the other cast members. She was not killed off like James Evans of Good Times, Eric Monte's other series. John Amos (James Evan) complained about the direction of that series and was written out.
 
What was wrong with Ernest Thomas's glasses on the show?:
During the entire first season of the show Ernest Thomas's glasses had no glass in them. This was very obvious when there were close up of Raj on the show. There was no reason given to why this was done during the first season.
