Mabel King "Mama" wanted the Thomas family to have a father. On the show, Mabel was divorced. Bill, her husband and the father of her children remarried in a 1977 episode and was not seen in the series again. The producers' refusal to create a father for the Thomas household contributed to King's decision to leave the show in 1978.
