Anderson then interviews West Virginia Governor Joe Manchin to get the latest news about the rescue efforts. Also reported on is how firefighters have been able to get a handle on the wildfires in Texas and Oklahoma now that fires in the area have slowed down considerably. After finding one miner dead, the rescue teams are frantically trying to get to the others before carbon monoxide levels rise to dangerous levels inside the mine. Dr. Sanjay Gupta then highlights the several ways individuals can be afflicted by carbon monoxide poisoning and what can be done to protect themselves and their family members. Family and friends of the trapped miners are also interviewed to get a sense of what they’re feeling while waiting for news about their loved ones. When it looked like prayers were answered and the remaining miners where found alive, the elation felt by all involved soon turned to sorrow due to incorrect information led everyone to discover only one miner made it to safety. West Virginia’s governor then announces that the state is ordering a full investigation to find out why the misinformation occurred. Several colleagues of Cooper then reports from the nearby hospital with latest on the surviving miner’s medical treatment. Later, Capital Hill Correspondent Joe Johns investigates why took mining officials so long to tell the family of the miners that their loved ones died. During the rescue of the only surviving miner, a letter written by one of his fallen co-workers was found and released to the media by the family members. Anderson then talks with Correspondent Randi Kaye to find out what it is like at the mine now that everyone knows the fates that the miners met. Anderson and Dr. Sanjay Gupta then discuss the content of the letter and what it is like to be afflicted with carbon monoxide poisoning. Following this, Anderson plays a segment of an interview with West Virginia’s governor with what it was like following the news of the miners’ deaths. With audiotapes of the rescue and 911 calls being brought to light, the families of the miners where able to gain insight into what rescue crews where dealing with in the mines. It is also reported on that rescuers, not doctors where determining whether the miners where dead and how they could have been wrong in those assessments. CNN Correspondent Randi Kaye then interviews the family of the miner who left the note to his family. With Tom Foreman and Wolf Blitzer reporting on the latest with Ariel Sharon’s recent health problems, they investigate what his future might hold for the shaky Middle East relationships around the world.
