As the New Year begins, reports are coming in from Iraq that the U.S. death count is now topping 3,000 lives lost, despite the fact that Saddam is no longer in power and was executed in late December. As Lebanon and Israel continue to fight in their bitter war, Congress and the President are having their own battle over immigration reform. Also, one week following his death, friends, family, and former colleagues say good-bye to former President Ford before being laid to rest in his hometown.

Also reported on is Oprah Winfrey’s opening of a Leadership Academy for girls in South Africa, and surprising news that following the Sago Mine disaster, the safeguards that where put in place to protect miners are not being used.

A CNN correspondent then interviews the Iraqi National Security adviser about their detention of the guard that taped the execution and why Saddam’s treatment by Shiites before his death was considered fair. Also reported on is President Bush’s plan to send more troops to Iraq. Republican Presidential nominee is profiled and what it would be like if he were the first Mormon to be elected President. It is also reported that a high school student is in custody after shooting another student at school.

In a special “Keeping Them Honest: The First 100 Hours,” Anderson and colleagues report on how the Democratic Congress, led by the first woman Speak of the House, and Democratic Senate Majority Leader are going to change lobbying practices and the course President Bush plans on taking in the war in Iraq. Also reported on is how more college students are leaving college deep in debt due to student loans and how Democrats are promising to help deal with their burdens.

In tonight’s installment, Anderson reports on growing outrage over two congressmen convicted various crimes and still receiving their pensions. As a result of the taxpayer outrage, both the Congress and the Senate are attempting to re-introduce a bill that will stop the pension payments to convicted congressional felons. Also reported on is Congressional Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid are warning President Bush that sending more troops to Iraq is a bad idea since it will endanger more American lives. It is also reported on that late Supreme Court Justice William Rehnquist was addicted to sedatives while still alive. Lastly, Anderson and colleagues report on how church employees have been stealing from collection plates, while in “Keeping Them Honest,” citizen groups are working on making Politicians in Washington accountable when it comes to their pet projects. Anderson then has a quick interview with Oprah Winfrey about the school she is getting ready to open in South Africa.

In tonight’s installment, Anderson reports that Democratic Presidential Candidate John Edwards is starting in New Orleans a road trip a rally to end poverty in areas that are hit by natural disasters, in an attempt to revive the Gulf Coast. In a story similar to Edwards’ trip, Anderson also reports on how residents in one New Orleans Parish have decided to rebuild its neighborhoods one house at a time. Besides the housing problem that the city is facing, New Orleans mayor Ray Nagin is working on finding a way to keep his city safe from murders and other violent crimes. Also reported on tonight is TB patient Andrew Speaker’s announcement that he intends to have surgery the following morning.

In breaking news, Anderson reports that a plane carrying over 170 in Brazil crashed when it slid off a rain-slicked runway. Reporters in Brazil announced that in addition the passengers and crew on board, 12 people on the ground died in the crash. In addition to the news out of Brazil, the Democrats in the Senate are planning an all-night debate over the war in Iraq, in an attempt to put pressure on Republicans to put the wheels in motion to end the war. Also reported on by correspondents is the increasing power being obtained by al Qaeda and the possibility of a new attack on the U.S. occurring. Around the U.S, several New Orleans police officers are accused of covering up a shooting; Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick is facing criminal charges in the case of the dog fighting that occurred on his property in Virginia; and TB patient Andrew Speaker is going to have lung surgery in an attempt to get cured and resume his life.

In addition to this story, more questions arise in the Brazilian plane crash that killed more than 200 people and what can be done to fix the short or deteriorating runways found at numerous airports worldwide. Anderson also interviews Senator John Kerry about recent reports of the Iraqi government taking the month of August off and how the White House is handling the war on terror. With the 2008 election rapidly approaching, several political experts are exploring the reasons why several previously non-religious candidates are beginning to court religious voters.

Following the death of a young man in a county jail in Mississippi, his family soon discovers that several former correctional officers who used to work at the jail allege that years of abuse and brutality have been going on. In a report entitled “Keeping them Honest,” Anderson and several CNN reporters investigate whether the allegations against the jail are true. In addition to this coverage, Dr. Sanjay Gupta is in China, reporting on the consumption of numerous endangered species that are being imported from around the world in CNN’s “Planet in Peril” documentary.
