Roald Dahl is a well-known British author, less well known in the United States. His most famous work,
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, is perhaps better known than the man himself, having been made twice (once with Gene Wilder in the lead role and a second time with Johnny Depp).
Tales of the Unexpected came about when Dahl approached John Woolf, inquiring whether Woolf might be interested in making some of Dahl's short stories into television episodes. This is the result - Dahl's quirky and sometimes twisted worldview as chronicled by his own pen and recast for the small screen.
