Episode Recap

Pete and Myka go to the Louvre in Paris to steal the guillotine blade that beheaded Mari Antoinette. Pete descends upside down to the guillotine display to avoid the electric eye beams, while Myka distracts the guards. She stuns one guard with the electro-gun but it runs out of juice when two others show up. She disposes of them with some skilled hand-to-hand moves while Pete drops his wrench. He lowers himself onto the platform to catch it and just avoids accidentally decapitating himself, and then switches the real blade for a fake. The two rendezvous and Myka complains that Pete was supposed to check the electro-gun charge and forgot to follow the plan. Pete claims he was just trying to keep her on her toes.

Artie is in his office checking news reports and picks up on three strange incidents in Unionville, CO. In each one, a seemingly normal person goes berserk. Sister Grace leaps from a rooftop; an old woman, Meg, throws her husband’s ashes at a hospital and writes expletives on the wall; Tommy Wilson, a high school violinist, smashes his instrument to pieces.

Down on the warehouse floor, Pete and Myka are putting the guillotine blade away. As they argue about who is in charge, Artie detects energy readings as a nearby crate glows ominously. He tries to warn them they’re generating too much negative energy but they ignore him. He finally doses them with neutralizer goo, leaving them bemused and laughing.

Later, the team meets at Leena’s for their next assignment. Pete insists he should be in charge and Pete tells him he is, but to let Myka think she is. Leena is talking with Myka and wonders if she has sexual feelings for her partner. Myka insists that she doesn’t. They proceed with the briefing and Artie tells them about the situation in Unionville, and the fact he can’t find a biological agent. He tells them to go there, ask his field recovery questions, and determine if an artifact is responsible for the incidents. Pete borrows Artie’s car since his truck is in Lake Michigan. After Pete leaves, Myka approaches Artie about who is in command in the field. He agrees she should be but tells her to let Pete think he is. Once both agents are gone, Leena wonders if Artie is still trying to track down the mystery hacker. Artie insists the person is just a pest who can’t penetrate warehouse security and he doesn’t plan to do anything about it.

The agents arrive in Unionville and start bickering about which one is in charge. They spot Meg stealing a newspaper by demolishing a newspaper dispenser and then going into a coffee shop. The elderly woman hears an EMT complaining to a colleague. Meg confirms who he is and then smashes his head through a display case. The police and EMTs arrive and take Meg into custody. The EMT, Ross, checks her and is unable to determine anything wrong with her. Myka, having noticed Meg’s diabetes tag, asks if her medication might be responsible for the outburst. Ross, impressed with her knowledge, says he already checked. Outside, Pete talks with Sheriff McKenzie and asks about the recent incident. McKenzie wonders why he’s so interested and Pete lies, claiming he and Myka are a couple on their honeymoon. McKenzie gets a call about Tommy again and goes to the high school to investigate. Myka overhears Pete’s last words and isn’t happy he came up with a cover story.

Myka goes to Sister Grace’s church and talks to the nun and the priest, Father Braid. Grace says that she thought she could fly and couldn’t stop herself. She works at a women’s shelter and hasn’t received any unusual gifts recently, and doesn’t know Meg or Tommy. Meanwhile, Pete finally tells McKenzie the truth. The sheriff is suspicious of his motives and his dishonesty but admits that Tommy is now in the hospital in a coma.

Myka approaches Father Braid privately and notes that Sister Grace is wearing a battered spouse bracelet. Father Braid admits that Grace has had problems but can’t discuss them. They return to the office and discover that Sister Grace has climbed out the window and up into the bell tower. Myka tries to get her to stop but Grace throws herself into the air. Fortunately she falls into a snow bank which breaks her fall.

That night, Pete goes to the local bar and contacts Artie to tell him what happened. Artie insists there must be a link and they have to find the artifact before the situation escalates. He signs off and starts going through his records, but energy starts surging throughout the warehouse. Artie goes to the containment system and puts in a new fuse, which seems to deal with the problem.

Pete manages to learn the location of the local AA meeting from the bartender. Myka arrives and admits she hasn’t had any luck connecting the three victims. Ross comes in and she admits she asked him there so she could get his opinion. Pete teases her about being on a date and goes to check out the AA meeting. Ross sits down, noting that his wife is watching his children, and then tells Myka that Meg went berserk again. Myka takes notes but then notices that Ross is staring down her blouse. Myka covers up and Ross goes back to normal.

Pete goes to an AA meeting and chats with one of the members, Davis. The leader, Ellis Hayes, comes in and starts the meeting.

As Myka goes over her notes, Ross has a brief wave of dizziness and then casually reaches for her breast. She slaps his hand away and Ross, chagrined, apologizes. However, he immediately does it again. As Myka stops him, Ross admits he can’t stop himself. She realizes that the EMT is “infected” as well.

At the AA meeting, Dave is giving a speech when he staggers momentarily. He then goes into a trance and walks out. Pete follows him to the bar where Myka is busy handcuffing Ross to keep his hands under control. Dave comes in and tries to have a drink and Pete stops him. Dave tries again as Ellis comes in. He notices Ross grabbing for Myka and says they talked about that. Pete realizes that Ellis had contact with both Ross and Dave, but before he can pursue the lead, Dave collapses.

Saying she needs to think, Myka goes to the best place for her: an ice skating rink. She and Pete call Artie, who concludes that the artifact “virus” will eventually kill the victims. Pete checks out Ellis while Myka goes back to see Father Braid. Artie is busy checking the energy anomaly, and assures Leena he has everything under control… as the power goes out.

Ellis refuses to discuss Dave and Ross under doctor-patient confidentiality. Pete notices that he has a pocket watch on display. As he picks it up with neutralizer gloves, Ellis says that it’s an antique belonging to the stage mentalist Joseph Dunninger. Pete takes it with him over Ellis’ objections.

Myka talks to Father Braid, who confirms that neither she nor Meg ever saw Ellis despite his recommendation to do so. As Myka realizes the two women had anger issues, she goes into a trance and starts talking about how the men in her life anger her. She seems to go into a trance but snaps out of it and leaves.

Ellis complains to McKenzie, who confronts Pete at the bar. He snaps at Pete, telling him that he still doesn’t trust the agents and he’ll do whatever it takes to protect his country. Myka arrives and Pete boasts that he’s solved the case. Myka, angry, punches him in the face. When McKenzie tries to stop her, she punches him too. Myka manages to regain control and they realize she’s been infected.

Pete bails Myka out over her objections that she’s a danger. He insists that he can trust her. Artie calls and they give him an update. He points out it can’t be the watch because Myka never touched it. They start arguing again and Artie tries to calm them down. However, once he signs off he realizes that the electric surges are the mystery hacker, trying to locate the warehouse.

Myka continues to lose control, swinging at Pete whenever she gets mad at him. They realize that Myka and all the others are acting on subconscious desires. They try to figure out the pattern of infection and spot both Meg and Ross going into Father Braid’s church. The agents go to Braid’s office and he confirms that he met with all the victims in the office. Pete isn’t infected and Pete figures that only the people that sat in Braid’s chair were infected. They call Artie who confirms that Braid’s great-great-great grandfather, James Braid, was a hypnotherapist. The springs in the chair became magnetized and that, combined with Braid having similar DNA, let him unwittingly mesmerize people.

People scream in the church and the agents go out to discover that McKenzie has gone berserk. He shoots Braid in the shoulder and the agents duck for cover. Pete starts to stun McKenzie with the electro-gun, but the sheriff reveals he’s wired himself with explosives as part of his plan to eliminate the enemy. The agents try to come up with a plan and Myka keeps punching Pete. Finally he goes for Artie’s car to get the neutralizer goo while Myka distracts the sheriff. Pete gets to the car, gets the goo, and pours it over the chair. He runs back and discovers that McKenzie is still berserk. He grabs an axe and goes back to Braid’s office while Myka tries to calm McKenzie down. The sheriff activates a 60-second time on the blade. Myka tackles him and the two struggle, while Pete manages to hack the chair apart. He runs back and grabs the explosives, and then runs outside. There’s an enormous explosion and he staggers back in, singed but unharmed.

Later, the agents return to the warehouse and give Artie their final briefing. He notes that it wasn’t so hard and Pete admits that it was kind of fun. However, they have some bad news for Artie: Pete used his car to contain the blast. They give him the only piece left, the cassette player, as Artie starts to lose his cool. Then they tell him that they’re kidding, getting revenge for him playing them off against each other. They leave, laughing, while Artie figures they’ve learned how to work together.

The air conditioning acts erratically and Artie goes to check the containment system. This time the lights on the display panel spell out a message: “Knock knock.” The hacker has located the warehouse.
