The opening ceremony begins at a chilly night, meaning it's the official start of the 2006 Winter Olympic Games. The ceremony includes fireworks, huge sparklers, and acrobats as each country's athletes march in. Italy, the host country, received the loudest ovation from the home crowd. Alberto Tomba had the honor of bringing in the Olympic flame and Stefania Belmondo lit the flame. The games have begun.

United States's First Lady, Laura Bush, was on the stands. | The "final surprise" Bob Costas said in the ending was revealed to be Luciano Pavarotti emerging from the red curtains with his rendition of Puccini's "Nessun Dorma". That closed out the ceremony. | This is the first time in the Olympics the Olympic Flag is carried in with only women. | The NHL Olympics players did not make it to the Opening Ceremony since the NHL Olympic break doesn't start until this Sunday. All the NHL players that will be playing in this year's Olympics is still playing their last game(s) with their respective team. | Germany lead the medal count in the last Winter Olympics with 36. Norway had the most Gold medal with 13. | For the first time in the Winter Olympics, North Korea and South Korea entered as one unified nation, Korea. One representative from both country carried the flag into the opening ceremony. They actually did the same thing two years ago in the Summer Olympic opening ceremony. There are even words they may compete as one country in the next Summer games in China two years from now. | This is the third time the Winter Olympics is held in Italy. The last two time the Winter Olympics were held in Italy were in 1944 and 1956, both in Cortina d'Ampezzo. |
