Sean Bean returns as Bernard Cornwell's swashbuckling hero, in a new two-part story set a year after Napoleon's defeat at Waterloo. Warned of a threat to British interests in India, Wellington sends Sharpe to investigate, in what turns out to be his most dangerous mission to date. The fate of an Empire and the life of a General's daughter lie in the former rifleman's hands.

Sharpe and Harper set out to rescue Celia Burroughs, but find themselves forced to seek the help of old adversary Sgt Shadrach Bickerstaff. True to form, he soon betrays them to save his own skin, and the entire mission seems doomed to failure - especially as British forces are under the command of an even more implacable enemy from the past, the incompetent Sir Henry Simmerson.

Sharpe is held captive by the leader of the opium trafficking ring. Harper is left in charge of making sure the train makes it through. Sharpe manages to escape with Marie-Angelique After he is reunited with with Harper they are forced to hide out in a village. Sharpe tries to get the locals ready to fight a battle that could be his last.
