Sharpe and Harper set out to rescue Celia Burroughs, but find themselves forced to seek the help of old adversary Sgt Shadrach Bickerstaff. True to form, he soon betrays them to save his own skin, and the entire mission seems doomed to failure - especially as British forces are under the command of an even more implacable enemy from the past, the incompetent Sir Henry Simmerson.
