Episode Notes

This episode is available for download on iTunes for $1.99.

Creators of the series, Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, have said that the reason this pilot was not picked up by the CW was a mystery, as they've stated that the pilot "perfect pilot by any stretch of the imagination."

The WB picked up this series, though when the WB and UPN merged to form the CW, the series was dropped from the line-up.

Co-Creator, Gough, says he hopes to have the pilot air as a part of season six of Smallville.

Lt. Rachel Torres, portrayed by Denise QuiƱones, recently played Andrea, the Avenging Angel in the Smallville episode "Vengeance".

A series of clips from this episode were leaked on to the internet for a while, though many of them have been discontinued.

In the opening shots of this episode, the series is called Aquaman, rather than Mercy Reef.

Justin Hartley, who portrays AC in this series, is going to play an early Oliver Queen (who later becomes Green Arrow) in the Smallville episode "Arrow".

The only successful way to kill a siren is to stab or shoot them between their eyes.

Episode Quotes

Atlanna: My son's story begins in the ocean - a place full of secrets, some are beautiful, some are dangerous. Its mysteries have baffled mankind for centuries. None more so than the Bermuda Triangle. But, in order to understand the Triangle, you must understand my son. Although he lives among you, he was born in the darkest reaches of the sea. I'd hoped to teach him the ways of the world, how to lead a good life and become a good man but then... I was taken from him.

A.C.: You want to know the real reason why I freed those dolphins? It's because I felt like they were calling to me.
Eva: So, what are you saying, you can talk to fish now?
A.C.: Dolphins are mammals and... no, it's more of a... weird empathy.

Young A.C.: And, dad, I held my breath underwater for almost five minutes!
Tom: Hey, that is incredible, kiddo, I swear you must be part fish!

Atlanna: They're coming for you. You have to get to the surface. Do good with your life. I will find you again, I promise! I love you, Orin.

Tom: A.C., I know your heart's in the right place but come on, this is the third time this year.
A.C.: Well, I guess these are the days when you wish you never would've signed those adoption papers.
Tom: Hey, kiddo. No matter how many times you screw up, and you're definitely going for the record here, I will always be your father.

A.C.: Look, I messed up. I'm sorry.
Tom: If you're really sorry... pull your life together, kiddo.

McCaffery: (to A.C.) Often, when you look hard and long enough into the deep, something's going to start looking back. Watch yourself.

McCaffery: Getting tired of staring at these bottles. Anyone around here want to pour me a drink?
A.C.: A little early for happy hour, don't you think?
McCaffery: You're Tom Curry's boy, I've seen you diving Mercy Reef.
A.C.: Didn't realise I had a fan club.
McCaffery: You don't. I run the lighthouse on Atlas Point. Gulls have nothing on my view.

Commander Daly: Coordinates are in your Nav/Com, you're flying over Mercy Reef.
Rachel: Permission to speak freely.
Commander Daly: Go ahead.
Rachel: Sir, if you've given me an easier assignment because you don't believe I can handle the rigors of this program, you're a hundred percent mistaken...
Commander Daly: This is not the LPGA, Torres! You tee off with the men. These orders come from way above my head. They told me to put my best pilot on it. Needed a clean sweep of the area. Now, if I've blown enough sunshine up your backside, are you ready to fly?

Ensign Gus Thompson: (to Tom) They're coming! I mu-I must warn Orin!

Brigman: Visiting hours are over.
A.C.: Who the hell are you?!
Brigman: This badge means I'm the only one asking questions.

Rachel: Wait, what's your name?
A.C.: It's not important.
Rachel: You saved my life. It's important to me.
A.C.: A.C.

Nadia: It's amazing how cruel people can be.
A.C.: Yeah... bothers me more and more, that marlin should be in the ocean not hanging above some moron's fireplace.
Nadia: Maybe some day the fish will get their revenge.
A.C.: I don't know, I think rednecks make pretty ugly trophies.

A.C.: Do you remember anything?
Rachel: Just a flash of light. Then, I was flying through the water... and you were carrying me and we were going so fast!
A.C.: You know, when you're drowning, um, your brain loses oxygen and you start to see things that aren't real. Maybe you should rest.
Rachel: Is that your way of saying I'm crazy?
A.C.: Your plane crashed at seven hundred miles an hour... so, I'm gonna reserve judgement until the painkillers wear off!

McCaffery: I hate those damn things.
A.C.: What the hell was she?!
McCaffery: Get your clothes on, we need to talk.

Nadia: You know, we met a long time ago.
A.C.: Are you sure about that? I think I definitely would've remembered you.
Nadia: Let me refresh your memory...

A.C.: Let me ask you a question, does Atlantis have a retractable dome or does everyone just swim around in there like a bunch of fish?
McCaffery: Don't mock me.

McCaffery: (to A.C.) You can't run away from your true calling, Orin!

McCaffery: Once a siren has you in her gaze, there's nothing a man can do.
A.C.: Siren? Of course. You act like you see them all the time.
McCaffery: I've seen my fair share. Unfortunately, my aim's a little rusty. The only way to kill those scaly bitches is to nail them between the eyes.
A.C.: Who are you?
McCaffery: An exile like you and your mother.
A.C.: Exile from where?
McCaffery: It's called different names by different cultures. You probably know it by its most famous... Atlantis.
A.C.: Atlantis? Yeah, right... next time you're in Atlantis, can you say hi to Captain Nemo and the Little Mermaid for me?

Eva: So, this girl, Nadia, is actually a killer mermaid who went to take you out because you're some sort of... underwater royalty.
A.C.: In a crabshell, yeah.
Eva: (laughs) Well, they always look so friendly on the Starbucks cups!
A.C.: Well, I didn't believe it, either. Until that siren tried to kill me. She's coming back for me.
Eva: Then I suggest a road trip to the desert with a truckload of Evian.

A.C.: Look, I'm sorry about all this insanity.
Eva: Yeah, well, being friends with you has always required a leap of faith! Besides, some day, you'll make it up to me and give me a cool title like... 'Duchess of the Deep'!

A.C.: This is insane! I'm a dive shop owner... I'm not the protector of the Seven Seas!
McCaffery: Destiny is like a riptide... you never know it's pulling you in until it's too late.

McCaffery: (to A.C.) I promised your father on his dying breath I would protect you, I'm not breaking my word now!

A.C.: Where's she taking us?
McCaffery: Home... to Atlantis... to be executed.
A.C.: Why hasn't she gutted us already?
McCaffery: You're a symbol of hope, Orin. If they kill you, that hope dies, too.

A.C.: Yeah, and what's my true destiny, huh?
McCaffery: To defend this world you've embraced as your own and protect the ocean from which you were born.
A.C.: Does he want me to fight sirens and Standard Oil?! Is that it?!

McCaffery: You know, that siren was just the beginning. There are creatures in the deep you couldn't imagine in your worst nightmares.
A.C.: Well, that's reassuring. Thanks a lot.
McCaffery: I'm not here to make you feel good, I'm here to prepare you for the worst.

Nadia: Your mother can't protect you this time!
A.C.: What did you do to her?
Nadia: Ha, ha, you'll find out! You're coming home, Orin!

Nadia: Where's Orin?
McCaffery: Rot in hell, you scaly bitch!

A.C.: Henry, the fourth, parts one and two. Hm, didn't really know Shakespeare was into sequels.
McCaffery: I expect for you to have read them by next week.
A.C.: Err, I gave up book reports in the sixth grade.
McCaffery: This is part of your training.
A.C.: Right, see, when you said training, I thought you meant, you know, wielding tridents and doing cool stuff in the water!
McCaffery: All in due time. Don't worry, there's plenty of sex and violence in there to keep you interested.
A.C.: Can't you just hit the highlights and tell me how it ends?
McCaffery: The lesson isn't in the ending, Orin... it's in the journey.

Episode Goofs

The siren in this episode already had a mark in between her eyes, though if she was shot or stabbed there, she would be dead, so how is this possible?

Cultural References

A.C.: A ten year old with a PC could have Photoshopped those pictures.

This is a reference to the computer program, PhotoShop, which allows you to doctor images in a fashion that makes the outcome look realistic.

Sheriff: How do you explain these Kodak moments?

This is a reference to the camera company, Kodak.
