Natural Oil
Giving the Tachikomas natural oil is dealt with in the 1991 manga Koukaku Kidoutai by Masamune Shirō. In the manga, the mini-multipeds are called Fuchikomas.

Harima Research Academy: Harima Science Garden City
Harima Research Academy actually exists. Named Harima Science Garden City, it is located in Hyōgo Prefecture of Japan. The capital of the prefecture is Kōbe, which is not far from Niihama-shi. One of the experimental devices found at the research facility is the SPring-8 Particle Accelerator (see below). A picture of the city can be seen here, showing that a white dome now covers the present-day garden within the central area of the circular building.

SPring-8
In one scene in this episode, there is a difference in what is said by the Japanese seiyū and English voice actress for Kusanagi Motoko. In the scene where Motoko relays to Aramaki that they're about to cross the Niihama Bridge, the English voice actress tells Aramaki that blowing up the bridge will, "cost four times more than their precious tank." The Japanese seiyū says that blowing up the bridge will, "cost four times the budget of the SPring-8 Particle Accelerator." The SPring-8 actually exists at the Harima Science Garden City. Available to scientists around the world, it synchronizes radiation fields that have been applied to many fields of science.

"Let's hope the old baboon comes through."
Batou calling the Chief "the old baboon" (the Japanese seiyuu calls him "old ape") is the same way that the members of Section 9 speak of the Chief, in their own affectionate way, in the 1991 Koukaku Kidoutai manga by Masamune Shirō. Batou is the first person to call Aramaki by that moniker in the manga chapter entitled "SUPER SPARTAN".

"I've got to at least give it a shot."
The Major trying to open the multiped's driver's hatch is a direct reference to the infamous battle scene in the 1995 movie Koukaku Kidoutai.
