Kuze's attack on the Major causes her to make a mistake and think that their target is in Dejima. Due to this, Section 9 is ambushed and loses one of their newest recruits. When her head clears, Motoko realises that Kuze's attack on her was done while he was in Etorofu. Section 9 quickly heads to the Northern Territories island to capture Kuze. Nipping at their heels is the CIS, who has a few surprises of their own in store for Section 9. | | There are no foreign summaries for this episode: Contribute |

Etorofu: "PHANTOM FUND"
Section 9's visit to Etorofu, while different in objective, covers many aspects of the northern Japanese island found in the 1991 Koukaku Kidoutai manga by Masamune Shirō in Chapter 7 entitled "PHANTOM FUND". Of particular note is Aramaki's contact at the heliport where Proto waits, the attack on the "militarist" by the crowbar-wielding thugs (Motoko is actually attacked by the thugs in the manga), the subterranean sub base being illegally used by Sagawa Electronics, the cyberhacker friend of Motoko (along with his gate guard, elegant stairway, and sex androids), and the Russian that Kuze exchanges the money for the plutonium with. All of these concepts are taken directly from the manga chapter. | Etorofu: Northern Territories
The island of Etorofu, considered part of the Northern Territories in the series (and also in modern-day Japan) is actually called Ostrov (Island) Iturup and is part of the Russia Kuril Island Chain. Covered in "LOST HERITAGE" and "CAPTIVATED", the Northern Territories are finally mentioned here as being retaken from Russia towards the end of Non-Nuclear World War IV. Also mentioned here is the Battle of Nemuro, mentioned in "ANNIHILATION" as the Umibouzu played a large part in the operation. More information on the "Northern Territories" can be found in the Cultural References section for "CAPTIVATED". |

Analysis |

When she first enters Krolden's dive room, the Major thanks him for supplying info, "during the Nemuro landing op." While this part is also taken directly from the 1991 Koukaku Kidoutai manga by Masamune Shirō (Chapter 7, "PHANTOM FUND"), it also indicates the whereabouts of the Major before her time in Mexico with the UN forces in episode 14 of 2nd GIG, "POKER FACE". It may also indicate that Motoko worked hand-in-hand with the Umibouzu (referenced in episode 24 of 1st GIG, "ANNIHILATION", during, as Batou tells Ishikawa in that episode, "the battle to take back Nemuro." |
