Description: "Roots" details African-American life in the United States from the time of early slavery and is set against key events in U.S. history -- from the Revolutionary to the Civil Wars and eventual emancipation. The series begins with its main character, Kunta Kinte (Burton), being abducted from his African village, sold into slavery, and taken to this country where he refuses to accept his slave name of Toby. He makes several escape attempts but is finally caught and brutalized. He marries Bell (Madge Sinclair), his plantation's cook, and they have a daughter, Kizzy (Uggams), who is eventually sold away from them to a new master by whom she has a son. The boy grows up to become Chicken George (Vereen), a legendary cock fighter, who leads his family to freedom.
